Functions of a Brow Lamination Formula

Similar to hair curling treatments – lash lifting uses a chemical treatment referred to as “reduction” to breakdown the disulphide bonds within a lash and permanently redirects the lash into a lifted style. Each lash has multiple disulphide bonds that join one sulfur atom on one polypeptide chain linked to another sulfur atom on a different polypeptide chain.

The chemical known as a thiol compound or thioglycolate softens, swells and raises the cuticles present on the outer layers of the lash and the thioglycolate molecule enables the disulphide bonds within the natural lash to break open, the polypeptide chains are now able to easily be reshaped.

The broken disulphide bonds are then reformed through the neutralisation of the thiol compound used to break them. Commonly a hydrogen peroxide chemical or similar is used to set the lash by reforming the disulfide bonds. The setting process can result in some lightening or lifting of the natural lash colour as the cortex of the lash which gives the lash its natural shape, colour, moisture and natural melanin (pigment) has experienced a chemical reaction. To avoid further lightening of the lash - remove lifting lotion by carefully rinsing and blotting before the application of the neutralisation step. The neutralisation or setting process combined with conditioners brings back the PH levels of the lash and strengthens the broken bonds.

The lifting and setting process occurs while the lash is rolled around a silicone rod to give the lash its new shape and direction. As the bonds are softened and broken they are mouldable and easily shape to the curl of the silicone rod that the lash is wrapped around. The selection of rod size is imperative to achieving the optimal result as is the placement of the lashes on the rod or pad. A water soluble adhesive is used to glue the lashes to the rod and keep the lashes in the desired direction during the processing times.

Please ensure that the location of the consultation is relaxed and private. You may wish to charge for this consultation and advertise this as a “lash assessment consultation with a lash artist or personal lash styling program.” Have a mirror handy and take notes building a file on your client’s desires or previous lash treatment history. Record as many notes on the indemnity and client card as you possibly can.

This consultation phase is so important for you to understand your client’s expectations and so they can understand the treatment they want to have. Providing before and after images or a profile of your work to showcase your skills and achievable effects and styling is a great way to seek your client’s understanding of the treatment.

CONSULTATION SUGGESTIONS

• Refer to your contraindications at this stage and discuss any eye sensitivity and claustrophobia, ask them to remove contact lenses if appropriate.

• Compliment your client and build their trust in your knowledge of the treatment that you are offering.

• Identify what they like and don’t like about their eye area and lashes.

• Ask them about previous lash treatments that they have had or what they like or don’t like, be sure to mention the importance of aftercare and using the correct make-up remover.

• Make suggestions based on what you think might look suitable for them.

• If the lash condition has been previously over styled or worked due to other lash enhancement treatment you might like to recommend a lash tint and a conditioning treatment or lash rehab program.

• Explain the treatment to your client and describe what it will feel like to wear lash extensions drawing attention to aftercare.

• Ask your client to sign the indemnity form and ask them to rebook for their removal or reapplication.

A1. It is possible that some clients have a stronger follicle direction on one eye. If this is the case you might need to notate this on the client card and compensate for this when they come in by processing the stronger eye for longer.

A2. Were you specific enough about your timing? Lash Lifting results can be a ected by as little as 30 seconds, if you applied the lotion to one eye and the processing time began, then you waited between applying to the second eye, the rst eye will have a stronger lift or perhaps even be over processed. Be very speci c about your timing.

A3. Lash placement on the rod – if you have not symmetrically placed the lashes on the rods so that both eyes are the same and complimentary then this will be evident when the rods are removed and the lashes are dried. Taking a photo of your client’s eyes open before you begin the lifting process and refer to their iris location once the rod is on may help your lash placement

A4. Lash Lifting adhesive – be mindful of your usage, this product (even though it is water soluble) can create a barrier between the lash and the lifting or setting lotion. The adhesive has a setting time that allows you to roll the lashes up onto the silicone rod, however, sometimes the adhesive might set before all of your lashes are up. You can use a small amount more of adhesive but you need to be mindful of the placement of the adhesive – if you are coating the already well-placed lashes with adhesive those lashes might not lift.

Regrowth cycle

Brow hair natural loss

A1. If your client is starting to see a change to their lashes after the first 24 hours this is no longer the product – this is their own natural lash regrowth cycle. To determine how many of their lashes are in the resting phase or growing phase when you are performing the treatment can be difficult. By following the rough estimate that we lose on average 3 natural lashes per day then after 14 days (two weeks) your client will have lost 42 of their own natural lashes and new lash growth that will see lashes pointing in a crossed over direction or growing out. This might also mean that the next time they come for a lash lift the regrowth stage might be much slower and the lift will last them longer. The length of time that your lash lift lasts will be determined not by the result of the lift but by the speed at which your lash regeneration cycle is taking place.

A2. If a client is losing 5 lashes a day by the end of two weeks they will have lost 70 lashes ( 5 lashes x 14 days) and the visual of 70 no longer lifted lashes but new straighter growth coming through would be very obvious. Equally, if a large portion of your client’s lashes were in a growth phase when you lifted them (you may have noticed some baby lashes) then these lashes will still be growing out with regrowth of un-lifted lashes at the base. This can make the base of the lash look straight and the end of the lash start to look twisted or crooked. We see some clients who particularly shed their natural lashes more during certain seasons of the year and therefore a lash lift might only last a few weeks. This is not a result of the product nor the result of the lash lift treatment but the result of the lash cycle. You can x this easily by re-lifting the lashes.
