Kora, Brooke, Annelise and Sydney-Rose

2 of 15

Aim

We want the lollies to dissolve in the hot water.

Our investigation:

Which lolly will dissolve faster in hot water?

4 of 15

Hypothesis

Brooke: I think that the fruit burst will dissolve first because I think they have more sugar.

5 of 15

Hypothesis

Annelise: I think the Macintosh will dissolve the fastest because they are caramel and when you chew on them they get stuck in your teeth then they disappear.

Hypothesis

Sydney-Rose: I think mints will dissolve first because it has less sugar than sweet lollies and it’s more refreshing. Mints are going to make a nice smell like peppermint mints are made of less artificial colour so I think the mints are going to dissolve first and bring less colour in the dissolving process.

Method

  1. Get six cups of hot water and poor two into the three ice cream containers each.
  2. Get three lollies that are the same size and shape.
  3. Unwrap them and put them in the hot water at the same time.
  4. As soon as they are in the water start the timer.
  5. After the first minute poke with the toothpick to see what is happening.

Thesis

What we already know about lollies:

Brooke: I know that lollies have lots of sugar and have lots of ingredients that are not good for you.

Annelise: I already know that most lollies have lots of sugar. SO, will the amount of sugar affect the speed that they dissolve in? There are many different types of lollies and most of them aren’t sugar free.

Kora: I already know that there are hard lollies, soft lollies and a whole lot more types Of lollies.

S-R:I know lollies have lots sugar, and that there are lots of different types of lollies that ca be used with lots of other things

Observations

Macintosh - The macintosh were getting bubbly stuff on the top of them it looked bad and smelt gross. But after awhile it started to dissolve but it was quite soft and poky

Mint - The mint were getting smaller and smaller as time went by. But they were getting a bit foggy, they also smelt quite nice we poked them with a skewer and it was quite tough but after a while it started to get soft and small

Fruit burst - we thought not much people like banana flavored fruit burst so we put the yellow fruit burst in the hot water it started to turn yellow and a bit foggy.

Conclusion

Sydney-Rose was right, with the mints dissolving first.

Then Brooke and Kora were next with the Fruit Burst.

Annelise was nowhere near with the Mackintosh just melting fast but not dissolving.
