Meet the Team
HArmony Science Academy - Fort Worth
Harmony Science Academy first opened its doors in 2006.
36000 square feet of concrete.
Previous a Winn Dixie and Piggly Wiggly prior to this.
Constant educational limitations due to insufficient space usage and general mentality that discourages outdoor learning.
The Cage
A small patch of artificial turf that has been labeled as “The Cage”, students are expected to have recess in this area for recreation time to spend with their peers after lunch.
Mission Statement
Our goal as a school and throughout the community is to bring health, wellness, sustainability, philanthropy, art, gardening, and outdoor educational opportunities to all students.
Prototypes
Engineering students started this garden by creating prototypes with Legos.Students were tasked to create a garden in the space that was available at our school and allowed to go outside and visually see the land that accessible to use.
Hot Day
And lots of work to do. Students were tasked with building benches with 6 (4 x 4) and 14 cinder blocks per bench. This was done during their engineering class time.
Engineering
Students painting cinder blocks that will be used to create the garden beds at school. Since this was done as a sustainable engineering project, all grade levels were able to help create the garden during their class time.
Garden Build Day
Students and Staff Decorated Cinder blocks to help add their personal touch to our Garden beds. This was 100% done on a volunteer basis with many students donating time and creating artwork.
Diverse Culture
We have many students that come from a variety of different nations, including The Philippines, Egypt, Albania, Bosnia, Turkey, Russia, Nepal, and India. In order to celebrate this diversity, students are encouraged to create artwork that is meaningful to them and their heritage. We have artwork from many countries scattered throughout our garden.

Healthy Food Drive
Destination Imagination Students were tasked with creating Food Drive Boxes and getting our student population to donated healthy food choice items.
Community Crossroads
Tries to provide engaging programming and outreach to create a caring, inclusive community. They provide hospitality, advocacy, nurture, and dignity. Every Wednesday, Crossroads, offers shepherding classes, teaching classes, preparing meals, and music of worship.
Teaching service, teaching health
DI Service Learning was able to make healthy meals at a low cost price. They donated the healthy foods from the food drive to Community Crossroads, then created healthy meals and taught them how inexpensive and wonderful healthy eating could be.
Serving
The those in need. DI Students served items like chips and pico de gallo, fruit salad, eggs with veggies and bruschetta.

Healthy low cost meals to staff and show how easy it is to create these simple delicious recipes.
Real School Gardens
DI students, staff, admin, teachers, and parents submitted a thorough application in hopes that we would be selected. Our application was selected! Out Teach (previously REAL School Gardens) meets with HSA-FW students to discuss the possibility to build outdoor learning centers at school.
Innovated Students
For their Service Learning project, DI students were tasked into creating a storage device made out of cardboard and they created this monster of a treasure chest.

And spell the judges… This was our team at the Destination Imagination Service Learning regional competition last year.

And presents all that they have done throughout the school year to the DI Judges.
COST-ANALYSIS
The team broke down the cost of meals when the ingredients were purchased at a regular grocery store, an organic specialty store, and with most of the ingredients grown at a community or backyard garden. They showed that it is much less expensive to eat healthy foods when using community gardens.
Placed at Regionals
Our team placed 5th at the regional competition, and almost advanced to the state competition.
New year, New Goals
We achieved so much the previous school year but we still had so much more to accomplish.
Service Learning
Started the school year with the mission to get Real School Gardens secured and the $10,000 per year needed to get outdoor classrooms.

Sophie created homemade gummy treats to be sold at our halloween fundraiser.

Penny War Advertisements
This year, one of the advertisements that DI started was Penny Wars, where students were asked to donate spare change.
The deal
To get students interested in Penny Wars, the grade level with the most donations will be able to witness, One Admin kiss a donkey dressed as a unicorn, another Admin kiss a baby pig and Ms. Brown kiss a big fat pig.

Selling sweets and treats and working together.

Besides Sweets and Treats, we served refreshing coffee and tea to help raise funds.

Was one of many fundraisers to help raise funds for outdoor learning centers for students. Here the students are advertising outside to parents during dismissal.

MARKETING and making connections
Our Service Learning team has learned that they must talk to people in the community and ask for help with projects. They take pictures, make flyers, and make announcements at the school to get more families involved with our events, like Yoga In The Garden.

Yoga in the garden
Harmony provides the first Yoga in the Garden session and enjoy healthy treats in the Garden. These events are planned to be held monthly, and feature various health and fitness instructors who volunteer their time. The classes are offered for FREE for all Harmony families and staff, and they can all try different healthy snacks and tea at each event. No junk allowed!

Our first Yoga Event was a success with our garden in view. Students were able to relax their body and mind with the power of Yoga. We filled the cage!
Yoga in the Gym
Due to the cold weather, we held our second Yoga session in the gym and featured a new instructor who specialized in teaching children.
Monthly Family Engagement Event
We tried to make connections with everyone. We met our first Jiu Jitsu instructor through a parent referral, and the kids really enjoyed the energy from his class. He brought in mats and several guest instructors.

After trying martial arts, we learned this appealed to different children. We decided to mix up our classes more, and always include martial arts. Our February instructor will be teaching a Judo class, as well as self-defense.

After an intense lesson of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, our students were hungry for Healthy treats.
January Family Engagement Event
To start the year off right, we wanted to challenge the kids with BOOT CAMP! We featured our first ever boot camp class, and it was open to all ages. This class was held last weekend.

Team Work Makes the Dream Work
One step forward...
...two steps back. The wind really hurt our garden this month. Fortunately, we have volunteers who are signing up to help us rebuild. Our school really embraces community, and we want every student to be a part of this process.
Partnership with Out Teach
In January 2019, our school once again met with Out Teach to collaborate and connected, they felt confident for us to be accepted with Out Teach and started to schedule Dine and Design.
Dine and Design
Currently, the entire school is having a competition to help with the designs of our gardens. They are building prototypes and creating blueprints, and three teams will be selected to collaborate with our Out Teach project manager so that the ideas from the students are included in our final design. Students contribute EVERY STEP OF THE WAY!!
Our hard work is paying off
After over a year of planning, meetings, and fundraising efforts, Out Teach has confirmed our official BUILD DAY! We’re tearing up concrete and making room for grass and dirt. The outdoor learning center is coming!
