MATTHEW CHAPTER 16

  • Jesus Tells of His Death and Resurrection (vs. 21-23)

    • Rebuke - an expression of sharp disapproval or criticism

    • Peter thinking of self and earthly things
      • Countered in coming verses

  • Instruction for True Discipleship (vs. 24-28)

​

    • … deny himself and take up his cross and follow me … (v. 24)

​

    • Matt 16:28 ... some standing here will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.
    • Mark 9:1 … some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.

  • The Transfiguration (vs. 1-13)

    • Why only Peter, James and John? (v. 1)

​

    • 6 days vs. 8 days in Luke 9:28 (v. 1)

    • What mountain?

    • Transfigured?

    • Why Moses and Elijah? How did they recognize them?

​

    • Peter is wrong again; using words that seemingly put Jesus on a level equal to Moses and Elijah (vs. 4-5)

    • ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, hear ye him.’ (v. 5)
      • Matt 3:16 same words at Jesus’ baptism plus ‘hear ye him’

  • Jesus Heals Boy With Demon (vs. 14 – 21)

    • Epileptic – could be interpreted as ‘lunatic’ or ‘moonstruck’

​

    • Jesus easily does what the disciple could not do in this situation

​

    • Another lesson for the disciples
      • Where was their focus?

    • V. 19 How was disciples' question to Jesus answered?

    • V. 21 Some manuscripts insert v.21 ‘But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting’.
      • Mark 9:29 ‘This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.’

    • One new aspect is that he will be ‘delivered up into the hands of men’
      • ‘betrayed’

    • Disciples still struggling with this situation and were very sorrowful

  • The Temple Tax (vs. 24-27)

    • Temple tax was required/collected from Jewish males over age 20
      • Actually began in the time of Moses

​

    • Jesus did not owe the tax but went beyond to avoid offending the Jewish leaders in this instance
