Fine Draft Readthrough

We’re almost finished with our script!

Fine Draft Readthrough

It’s time to read through the fine draft of our screenplay. As we do let’s remember a few things:

  • The major story beats will likely stay the same at this point, but minor changes can still definitely be made
  • We’ll be reading through on Final Draft, so I can make changes as we go along
  • You should keep an eye out to identify whether the dialogue is written for the ear or for the eye
  • You should also keep an eye out for what we can show rather than tell

Set Etiquette

How should we be acting on set?

On Set Etiquette

There are a few things to remember for you to act professionally when working on film sets.

1. Work only within your role/s - E.g people from the camera department shouldn’t be calling cut, the sound department shouldn’t be giving costume advice.

2. Do not interrupt - If you think you’ve noticed something that might ruin a take, you should always wait until the end of the take to notify a department head.

On Set Etiquette

3. Follow the unique rules of each set - Some sets are loud and chatty places, others are very strict and want to run as close to schedule as possible. It’s generally a good idea to follow the example set by your department head.

4. Always be respectful - Just like in class, you should always be polite and treat other people on set with respect, regardless of their role.

5. Safety a top priority - A perfect take means nothing if your set burns down right after. Make sure you stick to the safety protocols implemented on your set.

On Set Etiquette Scenarios

  1. While in the middle of a take, you notice one of the actors accidentally look directly into the camera for a few seconds. You know that they're not supposed to do this. You consider whether you should interrupt the take to let everyone know what happened. Do you?

On Set Etiquette Scenarios

2. While working in wardrobe department, you have a bit of downtime on set. You notice the camera team is busy setting up a shot, and a few suggestions come to your mind on how to improve things. Do you share your suggestions?

15 of 49

On Set Etiquette Scenarios

3. You've just walked out of the bathroom while the rest of the crew is in the middle of a take. You're all by yourself in the room. You smell smoke, and upon inspection you notice that a small fire has broken out in a waste paper bin because it was too close to a light fixture. What do you do? How do you talk to?

Recap

  • It’s always a good idea to read a script out loud, as this ensures that you’re writing for the ear and not the eyes
  • You should always act professionally when on set and practice good set etiquette

Homework

  • Keep thinking about what we can add to our screenplay!
  • If you send things to commsmanager@busstopfilms.com.au throughout the week, I can incorporate them into our final draft
  • Next week we will have our final draft
