Tappan’s Rainoff Reducer Rain Gardens!

In June 2023, Tappan science teacher Sarah Frantom applied for and was awarded a grant with the Washtenaw County Conservation District to improve the water flow from the front driveway down the slope to Stadium Boulevard.

This was the existing material at the 5 different curb cuts.

After a lot of planning, the digging process started in March 2024.

The soil was great, but filled with so many rocks, most larger than football size!

Mulching took place in late March, and we found a use for all those rocks!

After the first heavy rain, adjustments were needed due to the overflow in the westernmost rain garden…

Increasing the basin size, building up the sides, and adding a rock filtration dam at the opening helped a lot!

In early June, Feral Flora delivered 11 trays of native pollinator-friendly plants!

Official Sign Installation!

On June 14, the official WCCD sign was installed in the ground at the first - and largest - of the 5 rain gardens.
