There are many reasons for food shortages in South Sudan. These include war, drought and political corruption.

One cause of food shortages is the civil war in South Sudan. It has displaced millions of people and disrupted agricultural production, leading to food shortages.

Another cause of food shortages is due to the fact South Sudan is vulnerable to climate change. This can be manifested through longer droughts followed by periods of flooding, which can damage crops and infrastructure, leading to food shortages.

A third reason for food shortages is corruption. This can lead to food aid being stolen or diverted.

South Sudan is one of the most food-insecure countries in the world, with over 70% of the population facing acute hunger. The main causes of food shortages in South Sudan are war/conflict, climatic factors, pest infestation, and political corruption.

The Civil War between the SPLM and the government as well as the conflict with Sudan has displaced millions of people and disrupted agricultural production. Farmers have been unable to access their fields, and crops have been destroyed by fighting. In addition, the war has led to a shortage of labor, as many people have fled the country or joined the armed forces.

South Sudan is also vulnerable to climatic factors such as drought and flooding. Droughts can cause crops to fail, while flooding can damage infrastructure and make it difficult for farmers to access their fields. In recent years, South Sudan has experienced increasingly extreme weather events, which have exacerbated food insecurity. Over 260000 people have been internally displaced by flooding, leading to loss of labour and falling food production and food shortages.

Pest infestation is another major cause of food shortages in South Sudan. Fall armyworm, a type of caterpillar that can destroy crops such as maize and sorghum, has become a major problem in recent years. The fall armyworm is particularly difficult to control because it is resistant to many pesticides.

Political corruption is also a major factor contributing to food insecurity in South Sudan. Corrupt government officials often steal food aid or divert it to their own supporters. This makes it difficult for the most vulnerable people to access the food they need. 7.7 million people or ⅔ of the country are food insecure and aid does not reach the most vulnerable.

All of these factors combine to create a situation where millions of people in South Sudan are facing hunger. It is important to address the root causes of these factors in order to improve food security in the country.
