Fusilier fish always travel in schools or shoals near coral reefs. The formation of schools is essentially a defensive action by fish. Predators are often confused by the size of a closely clustered group of fish and have difficulty focusing attention on any particular individual. When a predator does attack, the shoal may split into two groups on either side of the assailant and then reform into one group once it has swum through. Alternatively, they dart in all directions in what is known as a “flash-expansion”.
