Why Do You Journal?

  • Set attainable, specific goals
  • Monitor progress on goals
  • Communicate concerns to your advisor
  • Reflect on your use of the 21st century skills in working toward your goals

Each journal is worth 25 points.

When Do You Journal?

  • You will set your goals within the first week of the month
  • You will do 2 updates during the remainder of the month

Goals

Goals should be VERY specific

  • Wrong: “Work on my real-world application”
  • Right: “Look up the contact emails for the managers of the Food Pantry”

Journal Updates

  • Journal updates should be completed every 10-12 days
  • Requirements:
    • A date
    • Answers to the following questions:
      • Did you accomplish the goals you set? How? If not, explain why you didn’t.
      • What is your plan over the next week to achieve or make progress toward your goals?
      • How can your advisor assist you in meeting your project goals?
      • Select one of 21st century skills and describe in detail how you used it or attempted to use it to accomplish your goals. You may also discuss how you would improve your use of one of the skills.
    • Advisors read these to figure out how to help you

21st Century Skills

The 21st century skills are skills that are essential for success for whatever you plan after high school - college, career, or military service. They include:

  • Oral Communication
  • Written Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Problem Solving
  • Use of Technology
  • Strategic Reading
  • Research

You will practice these throughout your Capstone project and be expected to reflect in your journals how you used them. They are always listed at the bottom of your journal.
