Creating a love of reading in children is potentially one of the most powerful ways of improving academic standards in school.
There are few better ways to improve pupils chances in school, or beyond in the wider world than to enable them to become truly independent readers.

Please sign your child’s record each time they read one of our ‘105 Books to Read’.
We will award certificates for 5,10 and 15 reads.
If your child gets stuck...
Use phonics first. What sound does the word begin with? Can you say the sounds in the word? Blend them together.
Read to the end of the sentence. What would make sense?
What is the text about – what might fit here?
Does it sound right?
Look at the picture. Does it help?
Reading
Read favourite stories over and over again
Read some stories at a higher level than they can read themselves.
Listen to them reading their school reading books.

Phonics Screening Check
The phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England, and is usually taken in June. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.
