  • Did not exist before
  • Fills a need or solves a problem
  • Can be an item (like cell phones or backpacks) �or an idea (a new method for tying a knot or ordering �at a restaurant)
  • Often makes something better (faster, stronger, cheaper, easier, safer; more efficient, attractive, useful, accurate, fun or productive)
  • Makes the world a better place — most of the time

  • decide key words that describe their invention
  • consult others about the problem to learn WHO is affected and to learn FROM who is affected

Inventors should share their models with others to get feedback and advice.

Each lesson plan provides timing guides.

Home?

Have the students work on their inventions at home – offer incentives and check-ins.

After school?

Students work on their inventions after school.

Plan for 6-8 wks minimum

Look over the curriculum and decide what lessons you want to use

  • On the front end, need time to kick this off – on the back end, need time to prepare for events

  • School is provided FREE PD and access to FREE materials.
  • Define the scope of the program.
  • Roll out program to students and parents, �and colleagues! This could be on the scale of one student or two friends!
  • Students work on their inventions and prepare for the virtual IC-NY preliminaries.
  • It’s your whole class? Host school/district Invention Convention, where inventors present to judges
  • Students are selected as Finalists for Invention Convention New York.

Inventions should be “material neutral”

    • Cardboard is as good as machined titanium
    • Build rather than buy
    • The student’s input is more important than the money input
    • An invention that is used on a car, does NOT include the cost of the car
