Growth Mindset

Each week, the children will vote for who they believe have shown a growth mindset and the winner will be awarded Neurone of the Week. The child will then have the chance to share how they have demonstrated a growth mindset outside of school. This book will be given out on Friday and should be returned the following week by Wednesday.

Attendance

  • At Sunnymede, we have been working hard to improve overall attendance. The Dfe continues to monitor our school to make sure this continues to improve and we need parents on board in committing to keeping their child’s attendance high (ideally over 97%).

  • Evidence shows that pupils who have good attendance and punctuality do generally achieve well.

Reading

  • Reading forms an integral part of our curriculum and good reading skills help children progress well. Reading daily with your child will enhance their progress greatly. It is an expectation that children read at home daily, (both silently and to an adult).
  • Dojo points will be given to reward reading.
  • Each week, your child can change their levelled reading book and explore a range of texts with their adults.
  • They are heard reading aloud by a teacher or LSA. The class teacher will make a comment on the online reading record at least once a month.
  • Three times a week your child will work on answering written comprehension questions in our whole class reading sessions.

Boom Reader

Boom reader is the on line reading record system that we use in KS2.

It replaces the yellow reading record diary that the children had in KS1

A letter explaining how this works will be sent home.

As part of the children’s weekly homework they should be reading at

Least 3 times a week to an adult.

Spelling, punctuation and Grammar ,SPaG

  • We focus on developing vocabulary. This helps with reading comprehension and creating interesting writing.
  • When reading, try to encourage children to ask questions about the meaning of words and how they can be used.
  • We model using dictionaries for our spelling and to check the meaning of words to encourage the children to do the same.
  • We will continue to test the children termly on the year 3 and 4 word lists at the end of each term.
  • With the increasing focus on grammar, we have to try and help the children avoid ‘Essex’ speak and use the standard English.
  • Eg They were ….not ‘they was’
  • We did ….. not ‘we done’
  • The handout has the list of key words for year 3 and 4, your child is expected to understand and use these within their work
  • There will no longer be a weekly spelling test. Children will have lessons twice a week using the programme Spelling Shed

  • The Sunnymede Times tables Challenge will be held every Friday. We will start with the 2 Times Table.
  • The children have 3 minutes to complete 50 questions.
  • In year 4, there will statutory times table test set by the government.
  • Number bonds to 10 and 100 are also very important to learn to help your child with their maths skills.
