Common Core State Standards

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA) developed under the direction of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association (NGA).

  • The math standards include both content standards and mathematical practices (process standards) outlining what each student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade.
  • The standards collectively define the skills and knowledge all students need to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live.

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

These are Standards of Mathematical Practice

Unpacking Standards for Mathematical Practice

  • While reading, use the CLASSROOM as a lens to consider the teacher and student perspectives.
  • Discuss key features and meaning of the Mathematical Practice.
  • What would it LOOK like, SOUND like and FEEL like in the classroom?

  • Make a poster to identify the key features of this Mathematical Practice.
    • Depict what it LOOKS like, SOUNDS like and FEELS like in the classroom.
    • Be Creative!
  • Each group will present its poster to the entire group.

Why focus on SMPs?

The standards for Mathematical Practice highlight the level to which math content must be known, focusing on the application, reasoning, communication and representation of the content.

Bottomline:

  • A deeper understanding of SMP enables us to envision what it means for our students to be mathematically proficient
  • SMP shift our teaching from a focus on content to a focus on application and understanding

Priority Standards: The Power of Focus

19 of 27

What is the purpose of priority standards?

  • Empowers teachers (math committee) to make wise decisions about what is most important in the curriculum
  • Separates critical elements of a curriculum from elements that are less important
  • Focus of priority standards is on learning rather than coverage
  • Every student in the district deserves an equal opportunity for learning priority standards
  • Every teacher should ensure that every student masters the priority standards

Deconstructing Standards

22 of 27

Why Deconstruct Standards?

  • Allows teachers to collaboratively make sense of and interpret the standard in order to plan instruction and assessment
  • To better understand what the standards are asking students to know and do, we need to classify standards
  • How you assess the standard and how you teach the standard is dependent on classification
  • The knowledge skills will help teachers know what to teach to help each student attain mastery of the standard
  • Teachers will be able to use targets from the deconstructed standard to identify learning challenges and strengths
  • New teachers will have a document to use to guide instruction

Recap

  • Teachers will teach ALL units/lessons of EM4 following the EM4 pacing recommendations (supporting standards connect to or enhance priority standards)
  • Priority standards will be assessed multiple times throughout the year (mastery expectation dates will be published)
  • Deconstructed standards will help identify learning struggles
  • Teachers should ensure that every student masters the priority standards
