‘Come to me and drink’

Jesus in John 7:24-44

@ Jerusalem, at the feast of tabernacles. They celebrate that God provided water for their ancestors when they were thirsty in the desert.

24. At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah? 27 But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.” 28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.

You do not know him, 29 but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.”30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?” 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”

[33] Jezus zei: ‘Ik zal nog een korte tijd bij u zijn, dan ga Ik naar Hem die Mij gezonden heeft. 37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

[37] Op de laatste dag, het hoogtepunt van het feest, stond Jezus in de tempel, en Hij riep: ‘Laat wie dorst heeft bij Mij komen en drinken! 40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.

[40] Toen de mensen in de menigte dit hoorden, zeiden ze: ‘Dit moet wel de profeet zijn.’ [41] Anderen beweerden: ‘Het is de messias,’ maar er werd ook gezegd: ‘De messias komt toch niet uit Galilea? John 4:14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.

Are you Thirsty?

Let’s start with verse 37 where Jesus says; “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.

First question would be Are you Thirsty?

We know what we do when we are physically thirsty right.. We drink something. Some water, or maybe some coca cola if you feel like it.

Do we know what we do when our hearts are thirsty?

Where do you go for refreshment? You cannot drink that ice tea to make your heart not thirst again.. So where do you go? What do you do when you are longing for rest?

When I look at myself, I sometimes just feel restless and want to have some action in my life. I think to myself; what new sport could I do, what new book can I read, which new project can I be involved in? The goal is not bad in itself, but the motivation is wrong. Because I expect too much of it; I expect that it would help my restless or empty feeling to go away.

Do you recognize a restlessness in yourself? .. How do you deal with it? Do you deny it or hide it?

I am learning to process these thoughts and motivations, and realizing that it is just me trying to tackle these restless feelings with more stuff to do. But I know that these restless feelings will only go away for a moment or return even more when being disappointed about the result.

Is there a source which doesn’t disappoint? A source that doesn’t run dry? Isn’t this too good to be true? Is this also for you and me?

Jesus says in John 16: 7: But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

*Let's go back to our maintext from today and read John 7, vers 38 and 39.

Whoever believes in Jesus. Do you believe in Him? Do you believe he is the Savior of the world?

Because frankly, you need saving. And I'll tell you why. You know, God is perfect in everything. EVERYTHING. Us humans do not even come close to His perfection. We do things our own way, try to be our own Gods. This creates a distance between God and us, that we cannot cross by ourselves or the effort that we put in. But God's rescue plan for the world was to cross this distance by Himself. He became human to take upon Himself the sins of this world by dying on a cross and resurrecting from the dead.

And another question: Have you received the Holy Spirit?

When people meet you, do they see streams of living water flowing from within you?

It’s time for an example.

Did you ever drink from a bottle with old, dirty, still water? It’s disgusting!

Did you ever drink fresh cold water on a warm day? Or when you woke up with a dry mouth? Or am I the only one with a dry mouth in the morning xD.

Can people see the Holy Spirit working in us?

People are searching for more in their lives. Looking for peace in all different places. What do we offer them? some space.. to find it out for themselves? Or do you tell them that you found a well that never runs dry.

Do people see the Holy Spirit working in you?

Paul says in Ephesians 5:18: Do not get drunk with wine. That leads to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.
