Frequency

Screen)

The High Frequency Words section is the only timed part of DORA. You need to work fast, but not too fast! Listen to the word and click the written word that matches. Don’t worry, you have five seconds, but try to stay focused.

The Word Recognition section is not timed, but you still need to focus. Once again, listen to the word and click the written word that matches. If you don’t hear the word the first time, click on “Repeat.”

Phonics

(Practice Screen)

During the Phonics section, it’s important to listen to the sounds you hear. Some of the words are real words and some of the words are just pretend. Listen carefully and click on the “word” that matches the sounds. If you don’t hear the “word” the first time, click on “Repeat.”

Phonemic

Awareness

(Practice Screen)

Phonemic Awareness is all about sounds. You will not see any letters or words. You will be asked a question and then the squares will wiggle when a sound is given. Click on the square that matches the correct sound. If you don’t hear the question or the sounds the first time, click on “Replay.”

During the vocabulary section, you will hear a word and you will pick the picture that matches the word best.

If you don’t hear the word the first time, click on “Repeat.”

Spelling

Screen)

During the Spelling section, you will hear a word and it will be used in a sentence. Then you will type how the word is spelled. Make sure to only use lowercase letters! If you don’t hear the word the first time, click on “Repeat.” When you are done, click on “Send” or press “Enter” on your keyboard.

When you get to the Silent Reading Comprehension section, make sure you are ready to read! You are going to read some stories and answer some questions about these stories.

(Note: All of the stories are nonfiction.)

Make sure to read the entire story the first time through. You can re-read the story or parts of the non-fiction story before you get to the questions. When you are all done, click “Done.” You will not be able to go back to the story once you get to the questions, so make sure you understand the story before you click “Done.”

The question and all the answer options will be read aloud to you. Make sure to listen carefully and click on the correct answer. Some of the questions and answers will come directly from the story, but some of the questions require you to think beyond the facts given in the passage.
