T: :) I’m always really happy when I have the opportunity to tell something about my experience on Svalbard, an archipelago above Norway, and is better known as Spitsbergen, because it consists of a lot pointy mountains which are almost completely covered by glaciers (more than 60%).

It was exactly one year ago that I studied here for half a year at the world’s northernmost university, as it lies incredibly close to the north pole.

Svalbard happens to be also the fastests warming place on earth. Literally, nowhere on the world it’s warming faster. So I carried out field experiments in the rivers to better understand the changing hydrology, I investigated snowpacks to better predict avalanches that have been increasing over the past few years, used drones to investigate the changing morphology of glaciers and one of the most fun things to was drilling holes into the permanently frozen soil, or permafrost, which was typically around 500m deep and was incredibly difficult to drill through.

This was really for the first time I could really see the effects of climate change with my own eyes. While this can be depressing, my time here was also one of the best times of my life. But it was not the daily sight of the northern lights that made it special, or the ice cave explorations, or the skiing trips on glaciers.

It was so special because of the people and our warm community that was united by our drive for adventure that made it unforgettable. So when I got home to the Netherlands again, and me and Wietse were both missing this warm community from Sweden and Svalbard, we asked ourselves the question:

what if we could recreate such a community that actually works on climate solutions?
