Dual Enrollment (JCCC/Baker)

  • SMNW class, but credit through JCCC or Baker University. Credit transfers to other universities. (~$300-$360/class)

Baker Concurrent Credit

  • Your grade in the class will be the grade you earn on your college transcript. Some classes are Pass/Fail.
  • Great option for students going to college in-state/midwest and is best suited for hard workers. Northwest has a 95% overall pass rate for dual credit classes!
  • JCCC Grant $ can pay for 1-2 classes per year for those in need.

Who is eligible to take classes at JCCC or Baker?

The Kansas Board of Regents states:

Freshman (with a gifted IEP)

Sophomores

Juniors

Seniors

are eligible to take classes for college credit.

Enrolling in College Now courses

  1. Enroll as a JCCC or Baker student. You only need to do this one time.
    1. Enrollment OPENS August 24th
    2. Sitting in the high school class does not enroll you in the college course.
    3. Go to JCCC or Baker website to enroll (see handout)
  2. Take the placement test (if necessary).
    • See handout
  3. Turn in all documents
    • Transcripts
    • Testing
    • Payments
  4. MEET DEADLINES (don’t wait to enroll)
    • September 11th is PRIORITY DEADLINE (shoot for this date!)
    • September 21st is the ABSOLUTE LAST DAY to have everything turned in.

  • How will the class transfer?
    • Wise to see how the college of choice will accept and apply the credit specific to potential majors
  • The grade you earn is on your actual college transcript (check with college to see if the classes are figured into that school’s GPA or just transfer as credit)
  • Explore drop policy (“forget” to drop = F)
  • Parents and students must do some research to make sure this is a good investment and proper course selection

Advanced Placement (AP)

  • College Credit is earned by passing the AP Exam. Most colleges accept scores starting at 3+ on a scale 1-5. ($106/exam, Free/Reduced lunch $45)
  • Most widely accepted credit in the U.S.
  • Great option for students planning on attending out of state college or select university.
  • Option is best suited for good test takers.

International Baccalaureate (Course or Diploma)

  • SMNW is one of 7 IB programs in Kansas
  • Globally recognized curriculum fostering critical thinking, cultural awareness, and ethical reflection to develop thoughtful global citizens. Great option for students who love learning and want to know why.
  • Juniors and seniors can take one IB course or earn the full diploma.
  • Exams scored 1-7. Most college accept scores starting at 4+ ($126.50/exam)
  • College scholarships available for IB students.

NOTE for Sophomores: Service Hours!

Why community service is important…

NHS, IB, Scholarships etc.

You can start accumulating service hours in January of your sophomore year. Service must take place outside of the school day, cannot include payment, and must be done for the good of others outside of your family.

Enrollment Schedule:

Enrollment for next year will start in January. You will get to meet with your academic counselor during enrollment in late January/early February.

​

Counselors don’t have time for individual questions before the enrollment meetings. Please fill out the enrollment card the best you can and have your questions ready at your enrollment meeting time during ELA class.
