Transportation and Civil Engineering (MDOT-TRAC ) Program

Student Experience:

Helena Quist, Iman Adem & Ogechi Obizuo

The TRAC Bridge and Rides Competition was an eye opening experience that sparked my interest in the field of Transportation and Civil Engineering.

Our team participated in a field trip to the famous Arch Bridge in Franklin, Tennessee as well as a visit to the Tennessee Department of Highway Safety to view a live presentation to see how the first responders operate together to improve highway maintenance and safety.

MDOT & AASHTO

Students Experience: Helena Quist, Iman Adem & Ogechi Obizuo

We appreciate the fact that the competition sponsors gave us the opportunity to tour and managed all our expenses as finalist gave us time to focus on the preparation for the competition.

We were able to network with other students and teachers participating in the competition as well.

We are impressed with MDOT and the value they place on students achievement.

Sony Hacked !!!!

23 of 78

What happened?

On Nov. 24, Sony employees came to work in Culver City, Calif., to find images of grinning red skulls on computer screens. The hackers identified themselves as #GOP, or the Guardians of Peace. They made off with a vast amount of data (reports suggest up to 100 terabytes), wiped company hard drives and began dumping sensitive documents on the Internet.

24 of 78

JPMorgan, 2014 - Hackers hijacked one of JPMorgan Chase’s servers and stole data about millions of the bank’s accounts, which they allegedly used in fraud schemes yielding some $100 million.

Target, 2013 - In December 2013, 110 million customers’ personal and financial information was exposed. CEO Gregg Steinhafel later resigned as part of the fallout from the massive breach.

Chipotle, 2017 - An Eastern European criminal gang reportedly used phishing to steal the credit card information of millions of Chipotle customers. The breach was part of a larger scam targeting restaurants.

Tesco, 2016 - Hackers drained a total of around $3.2 million from more than 9,000 accounts in Tesco Bank, the bank run by the giant grocery chain. Tesco was forced to reimburse customers for the stolen money.

Overview of Program: History and Objectives

The Future Innovative Rising Engineers was established in 2008 in the response for the call to engage more youth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)fields. Our organization gives Middle and High School students the unique opportunity to participate in STEM competitions, develop technical capabilities, engage professional engineers, and improve soft skills like teamwork, focus, organization, written and verbal communication, time management and leadership. Plus, we have fun!

29 of 78

Program Overview

Yes! Engineering competitions are great way for students to learn technical skills and STEM concepts.

They see first-hand how the concepts learned in the classroom translate to the real world. In addition, building skills like teamwork, organization, written and verbal communication, time management and leadership are also integral parts of the competition.

Engineering as a competitive sport.
