Types of Online Learning

Distance Learning

  • Teacher-led education that takes place over the Internet
  • Teacher and Student separated geographically
  • Online instructional delivery system.

EXAMPLE

High School Freshman takes Physical Education as an Online Course while attending traditional school with a full seated schedule. Student and teacher only interact virtually.

Hybrid Learning

  • Majority of learning takes place online
  • Includes some traditional face-to-face “seat time”.
  • Online instructor remains teacher of record if student meets with different teacher.

EXAMPLE

Student enrolls in online learning but still has to meet at school for pre and post fitness assessments. The educator facilitating the fitness assessments, may or may not be the online instructor.

Blended Learning

  • Combination of online instruction and school (brick-and-mortar)
  • Element of student control over time, place, and pace.
  • Number of variations for blended learning.

EXAMPLE

Student is attending a traditional “brick-and-mortar” PE course, teacher uses a digital learning system to deliver the concepts of creating a S.M.A.R.T. goal. Students create and submit their goal online.
