Creators of Empowering Learners through Universal Design

This project came from the Universal Design and Access Technology (UDAT) working group. From there, the project became an ASU Enterprise wide, grassroots project spanning Academic Enterprise, EdPlus, Educational Outreach and Student Services (EOSS) - specifically Student Accessibility Inclusive Learning Services (SAILS), Enterprise Technology, and Learning Enterprise with special instructional consultation and creation by two Mary Lou Fulton Teacher College Faculty, Angel Morgan and Steve Salik. We also had help from the media team at EdPlus, notably Ron Carranza and Frank Cordova, and Andrew Bautista and Aubrey Holland in creation of our faculty interviews in the course. We created a community of practice that shared knowledge, skills, and abilities in a respectful, kind, and inclusive way. We exhibited all of the characteristics that align with the ASU mission, vision, and values, as well as the belief that accessibility is everyone’s responsibility.

The goal of this structure is to provide a guided experience from introduction to application, while applying principles of UDL within the course. For example, learners may read through the descriptions, or use the player widget to have the content spoken to them through AI voiceover, and is supported by additional video content that also offers the learner a transcript. This support for multiple modalities is an example of the UDL principle of multiple means of representation.

The course design also supports multiple means of action and expression by providing options for learners to explore and apply UDL principles based on their comfort level or familiarity with the concepts, and their comfort level with supporting technology.
