WHAT IS BULLYING?

Research on this topic has proposed different definitions of this phenomenon, aiming at a more accurate description of this behavior. Among the most well-known and often used definitions of bullying behavior is that of Olweus (1999), which characterizes this behavior with the help of three criteria:

(1) is aggressive behavior or an act of malicious intent;

(2) it is a behavior that is repeated over time;

(3) interpersonal relationships are characterized by a power imbalance.

TAKE ACTION, SAY STOP!

  • We know that even when a person speaks to us in a loud, aggressive tone, or when he addresses us words intended to hurt, insult or injure us, the first tendency would be to respond in a similar manner.
  • Although this first reaction is a way of action of the human brain to defend itself, it is not advisable to respond to violent behaviors using the same aggresivity. To take a stand against violence, it is advisable to keep calm, tell a teacher, a parent or a trusted adult what has happened, If we want to help someone who is facing such a situation , intervene by communicating with him in an assertive manner, showing him that we understand what he is going through and guide him to turn to the people who can help him.

It is important to be aware of the fact that we have the right to refuse something we don't like, to react to behaviors that we consider unfair towards us. In order not to damage the integrity of those we communicate with and not to put ourselves in unpleasant situations, it is necessary to pay attention to the way we express our ideas and feelings.
