What are POCUS Pearls?

  • These are short informational “pearls” which can have one of the following objectives:
    • Review an important but potentially confusing core concept (ex: echo density of different materials, how does doppler work?, diagnostic pathway for pneumothorax)
    • Remind non-ultrasound-minded residents and faculty of a basic but important fact (ex: crown rump length should be used in early pregnancy, use color Doppler to differentiate hydronephrosis from renal vessels)
    • Provide exposure to an advanced topic, stimulating further self-directed learning (ex: theory of how VTI can approximate stroke volume, diagnosis of HOCM)
    • Teach a valuable advanced skill that is easy-enough for a lay-clinician to perform (ex: POCUS pulse, TAPSE, Diastology)
    • Instruct on a procedure that would rarely be performed at Denver Health, to broaden the base of knowledge for ultrasound minded residents (ex: popliteal sciatic block, stellate ganglion block)
    • Highlight a cool case that you or a colleague saw recently and highlight how POCUS might have led to a diagnosis or led to a save
  • Format: usually 1-3 pictures or a video, and 1-4 bullet points
  • Download this PowerPoint document and use slide 3 or 4 as a template
