Who is Raphael?
Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, also known as Raphael, was an Italian-born painter. He started off as a local painter, and then his career skyrocketed, making him famous in Rome. Everyone wanted him to paint them something - whether it be small or big, drawn in ink or chalk. They just wanted a Raphael piece of artwork.

The School of Athens
The School of Athens was painted between 1509 and 1511 in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. This piece of art by Raphael was inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci. Each person has their place in the painting, and each represent the study of ideas about knowledge, truth, the nature and meaning of life. There are also people in the painting that were important in Ancient Roman history.

Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints
This painting was made around 1504 by Raphael. It was hung in an area of the church that was only for nuns. Raphael also knew how to plan what buildings looked like, which we can see in a lot of his paintings. The painting was church-inspired, where we can see Saint Peter, Catherine, Lucy, Saint Paul, Young John the Baptist and Young Jesus.

The Sistine Madonna
The Sistine Madonna was painted in 1512. The Church San Sisto in Piacenza asked Raphael to paint something for them. In the picture is Mary and Jesus. But it’s the two angels at the bottom of the painting that have made the painting famous. One looks up with his chin in his hand, the other looks off to the side with his head resting on crossed arms.
