Our goals for today….

  • Set up an authentic learning experience within a coding/programming environment in collaboration with others
  • Share own ideas and strategies around using coding programmes for the classroom
  • Explore other coding tools and learn something new to take away and share

Benefits of coding

Encourages critical thinking and problem solving skills - The why

Creates engagement and enhancement of learning

Great for collaboration

Developing student agency - control and choice - eLPF Link to screenshot

Integrating into the curriculum

  • Inquiry - integrating literacy, maths, science, social studies, geography
  • Reading - background reading of topic (eg Connect article on Rising Seas) collating and reading other material around this.
  • Maths - Problem solving, algebra, Patterns and relationships Students are thinking and working on these strategies while they are engaged in coding…….
  • Technology - engineering

Assessment - Empirical data eg Probe, Gloss etc and anecdotal - OTJ’s, Peer and self assessment, rubrics

Not just play - a real time authentic learning experience!

Possible organisation: Start with a reading group - this group could work on a project for two weeks and share with the class- from there form inquiry groups for topic - let the students lead the learning!

Where to start in the classroom?

Start with a learning focus - what is the theme? story? purpose?

Show an exemplar

Discuss the big picture of coding - how does it fit in our world? The why

Make a plan for a coding activity (Lucid mind chart) (Mind Mup) Coggle

Coggle

Coggle

Possible starter - Rising seas theme - Use the Connected Google Slides as a discussion and create an activity around this theme - game, story, role play -explore and choose a tool from the following slides
