What is Social Emotional Learning?
The 5 core SEL competencies
SEL components are so important for the success of every student and we as educators are continuing what parents are already working on at home (e.g., being responsible, being a good listener, being kind, making good decisions, being respectful) to give our students extra practice.
We have had it in the past with programs for years such as Second Step.
WHY DO WE NEED IT?
Many of our kids, post pandemic, struggle with varying degrees about how to get along, how to be kind, how to self-regulate, and how to problem solve. THIS IMPACTS OUR WHOLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY AND CONTRIBUTES TO AN UNDER-ACHIEVING ACADEMIC CULTURE.

An Overview of CharacterStrong
At CharacterStrong we integrate social, emotional, and behavioral supports with academics. We believe that every student should have access to (a) safe, predictable and inclusive learning environments, (b) healthy supportive relationships with educators and peers, and (c) opportunities to learn skills that enable them to meet the demands of school and life. CharacterStrong is more than a curriculum—rather we see our work in partnership with schools and families to help support a positive culture and climate that enables students to become their best possible selves. We strive to develop low-burden, high-yield resources that enable schools to provide each student with access to the opportunities and experiences they need to be successful in school and beyond. We ground our work in defensible research that shows that (a) when schools teach social-emotional skills, they are likely to produce an 11% increase in end-of-the-year academic test scores without doing anything different with regard to academics, (b) social-emotional skills are the best predictors of work and life success, and (c) that for every dollar invested in integrating social, emotional, and behavioral supports with academics, there is a return of $11.Our work helps young people and adults alike develop the necessary competencies - individually and communally - to thrive in the 21st century. We support students, schools, and families from all over the world and are always available for feedback. If you have an insight you would like to share, don't hesitate to reach out at contact@characterstong.com We each get better when we take time to listen with empathy and respond with care - we are in this together!

Who is paying for it?
Calaveras County Office of Education has awarded MTUESD a 3-year grant in the amount of $40,000 to pay IN FULL for this program including staff training. This money can not be used for anything other than this program, or we need to return the funds.
