Once upon a time...

When King Lac Long Quan married Princess Au Co of immortal Chinese blood, they established a kingdom that stretched from southern China to northern Indonesia. She bore him 100 sons.

​

However, the King and Queen worried that their origins would ultimately make them unhappy, so they separated, each taking 50 sons with them. Au Co went to the mountains up north and King Lac Long Quan went to the lowlands down south. After the King died in 28179 BC., his eldest son Hung Vuong established the Hung dynasty.

​

He was credited as the real founder of Viet Nam and the first Vietnamese dynasty.

• 111 BC: Han Dynasty incorporates Viet Nam into Han Dynasty; known as Dai Nam
• AD 39: Trung Sisters revolted against Chinese rule; Han killed them
• AD 939: Ngo Quyen expelled Chinese forces and founded Ngo Dynasty
• 1009-1225: Art and culture under Ly dynasties

• 1773: Tay Son armies seized southern lands controlled by Nguyen lords

• 1861--1880’s: French attacks and colonization
• 1893: France incorporates territory into French Indochina
• 1930: Ho Chi Minh established French Communist Party
• 1940: Japan conquers territory

• 1941: Ho Chi Minh and Communists establish Viet Minh nationalist
• 1945: Viet Minh seized Viet Nam in August Revolution
• 1954: Viet Nam splits; Ho Chi Minh president of North Viet Nam; Bao Dai in South Viet Nam
• 1955: Bao Dai replaced by Ngo Dinh Diem
• 1963: Diem assassinated by U.S
• 1965--1973: U.S attacks; Da Nang, Tet Offensive
• 1976: North and South reunited as the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam; Saigon renamed Ho Chi Minh city
• 1990’s: U.S. ends embargo against Vietnam

Current Issues

Conflicts over the Southeast Asian countries and China over territory of the South China sea intensifies. China says it has jurisdiction over nine-tenths of the South China Sea, putting it at odds with four Southeast Asian states. Viet Nam is trying to reach diplomatic relations to secure its borders. Viet Nam, the Philippines, Malaysia and China are disputing over Paracels and Spratly Islands.
