Louis Agassiz on God’s role in Creation

Famous 19th Century Naturalist, Adventurer, Professor, Educator

  • Many noteworthy achievements described by David McCullough in Brave Companions.
  • E.g., one expedition study, Lake Superior – Its Physical Character, Vegetation, and Animals Compared with Those of Other and Similar Regions, was published in 1850 and was very highly acclaimed as “another emphatic declaration by the master naturalist that there need be no conflict between the revelation of science and Genesis. A reviewer wrote in the Watchman and Christian Reflector, “Agassiz belongs to that class of naturalists who see God in everything.” Agassiz had described the whole of creation as an expression of “divine thought.”

True pedagogy according to Agassiz

  • The mind is made strong, not through much learning but by close, open-minded, and thoughtful observation and examination resulting in “the thorough possession of something.”
  • Look at the object of study from every angle in order to penetrate more and more deeply into it.

Factoid: Our Milky Way revolves around a huge Black Hole…

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3-5

Our faith in Christ is unlike any other religion or philosophy

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

When a person is called out and accepts the call to be part of the Ekklesia, they become “born again” spiritually. They are no governed by a set of rules designed primarily to fit them into the world’s mold, teach them worldly ways to “make friends and influence people,” or merely to make them “nice” or sociable or successful. By new birth they have gone qualitatively beyond that and become citizens in and sojourners from an entirely different realm, God’s eternal Kingdom.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to consummate all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

Jesus will come again, this time on the cloudswith all His redeemed and resurrected saints at his side!

Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. Acts 1:11

Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. Revelation 1:7

Your kingdom come,

your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

For yours is the kingdom

and the power and the glory, forever. Amen

Jesus will reign on earth from Jerusalemfor 1,000 years with His resurrected saints.

21

And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air… And the ransomed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away… They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

And when the thousand years are ended… I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:7, 11-15
