What is Food Insecurity?

Food insecurity is when people don’t have access to enough nutritious food.

Food insecurity is when nutritious food isn’t available for people to eat.

Food insecurity is when people aren’t able to eat and digest their food due to food that is spoiled or because their sick.

Food insecurity is when healthy food is only available temporarily and not all the time.

Food Insecurity affects 41.2 million people in the United States.

12.9 million of them are children.

Over 2.4 million people in NY State are food insecure.

1 in 5 households are food insecure.

Most people who are food insecure live in areas where there are the following 2 options...

A Food Swamp is a place where there is only unhealthy food available to eat such as fast food and junk food.

A Food Desert is a place where it’s difficult to buy or find affordable healthy food.

What are causes Food Insecurity?

Food waste. We buy and cook more than we can eat.

High food prices. They keep going up!

Someone losing their job.

People aren’t getting paid enough for how much they work.

Another big cause of Food Insecurity

People don’t get hired for a job because of their skin color.

People don’t get paid higher wages because of their skin color.

People are treated unfairly when buying food because of their skin color.

Food swamps and food deserts exist mostly where people of color live.

There is enough money in the United States to feed everyone but there are too many people who live with too much and too many people who live with not enough.
