Adding Information

3 of 24

Choose an artist from the list on the board and find them on Wikipedia

4 of 24

Find out what book we have that the person is featured in.

If it’s taken for someone else at the moment, choose a different person or search for them using Quicksearch on the Library homepage.

5 of 24

Review your book or other library resource for information not currently listed on their Wikipedia page.

Consider where this information fits the best and go for it!

Keep in mind that Wikipedia tries to keep a neutral tone and use accessible vocabulary. Definitely make sure to use your own words! If you need help learning about paraphrasing, visit this super fast (3 min) library tutorial: https://vimeo.com/175422608

Don’t forget to add a citation for anything you add!

Thank you for adding new information to a Wikipedia page! You are amazing.

Keep on going, do the same for another person, or consider creating an entirely new page!*

*There are some rules about who can create completely new pages - ask a facilitator if you’re interested

Make sure you can create a new page

  • Your account has had to be active for over 96 hours and made at least ten edits to create Wikipedia articles.
  • If not - that’s okay - we recommend you make a draft page and ask someone to review it before publishing.

Make sure your person fits Wikipedia’s notability criteria

Double check to make sure you don’t have a conflict of interest

Decide if you want to make a draft or just go for it.

Organizers highly recommend you make draft pages

Translation

19 of 24

There are 309 Wikipedias in 309 languages! If you are multilingual, consider translating pages between languages!

20 of 24

We have articles that are robust in Spanish that need to be translated into English AND articles that are robust in English and need to be translated into Spanish. You can do this in a text editor or word processor.*

*Please do not simply use an automated translation tool like Google Translate.

21 of 24

  • Go to the Wikipedia site for the language you want to create a new page for
  • Click the button marked "create" or "edit" in the new language, or search for the person you are creating a page for
  • Paste your translation in the new page. Don't worry too much about formatting at this stage.

Write Edit Summary

  • Click Save
  • Write an edit summary providing mandatory copyright attribution stating what you're about to do and that the text was translated from the English/Spanish/other language Wikipedia.
  • You must provide an interlanguage link to the source article by name, to give credit to the original writers. We suggest text for the edit summary like:

Content in this edit is from the existing [English/Spanish/other Wikipedia article at [[:en:Exact name of article]]; see its history for attribution. Formatting follows.

23 of 24

Link to the Source Language Page

  • Go to the sidebar and click "Add links" or "Edit links". Enter "en", “es”, or other language acronym as the language of the wiki you got the content from, and the title of the page you translated, then click "Link with page".

  • If appropriate, edit again, tidy up the layout, and add links, headings and images.
