    • Why live the life that is expected of us? Why conform to societal conventions? I believe Jesus teaches us to be different. He teaches us to do strange things. What is normal for me can be absurd to others. That is why I feel no shame when doing something peculiar.

Last month, Federico, Samuel, and I hurried down the sidewalk in Chicago. We wanted to get some donuts from behind Dunkin’ Donuts, and we were willing to endure the freezing cold; a cold that froze my eyes open and numbed my hands. We laughed and reminisced of the “old days,” as we made our way to the store past the dimly cast shadows. Dunkin Donuts throws out their “old’ donuts at the end of the day, and the old donuts become our ‘new’ snack. Dunkin’ Donuts leftovers was somewhat of a tradition in college. Who doesn’t want free donuts?

      • Sauntering up the alley, we saw an empty wheelchair and a man crouched behind a garbage can nearby. “Is he pooping?” said Sam. “No, but I know that guy from somewhere” replied Federico. We passed the man, and walked straight ahead. At the garbage cans, behind Dunkin’ Donuts sat two huge plastic bags. I eagerly reached into one. “Gross, there are coffee grounds.” “Look in here” came Sam’s reply, “He pulled a cinnamon muffin, a asiago cheese pastry, and a glazed donut. We chowed down. A car drove by and driver gave us the evil eye. Who cares? We stuffed our faces. “These are good” chucked Federico. After I my stomach was full and my teeth were chattering we moved on laughing , “Soooo good.”

  • Conclusion
    • To me dumpster diving, taking someone else's old food and eating it, is a resourceful way of living. It might not be considered sanitary, but if I’m hungry, or someone else needs something to eat I’m willing to get some day old donuts right out of the trash can I do not care about the judgment of others. I think food is a valuable resource and if it is safe to eat, it should be eaten. I do not live life to please others, I live life for God.
