TWIN CITIES SLOVENIANS DEDICATION PAGE

THE MEDVED FAMILY

3 of 162

  • This updated history of the TCS (2015-2025) is dedicated to the Medved Family who have provided a wellspring of information and appreciation of the Slovenian culture. Frank, the senior of the Medved family was nine years old and Miro was just three when their family of six escaped out of Slovenia. Since the TCS was formed in 2005 their family has recounted stories of their five years in a settlement camp in Spittal, Austria.

  • A staff writer for the Zarja magazine, David Sodac(Volume 90, Issue 2, Summer 2018) wrote some of the Medved life experiences in Spittal where they were “assigned a cramped 10 x15’ former horse quarters inside barracks no.18. A meager life was carved out of the former POW camp. (May 1945)

  • In 1949 the Medved family were issued visas and were sponsored by the sisters, Theresa, Mary, and Anne Gillach of Pineville, MN, just east of Biwabik. The kids went to school in Biwabik where they began to learn English. Frank’s first assignment as an 8th grader was to start reading Charles Dicken’s “David Copperfield.

  • As David Sodac recounted each of the Medved children was successful and became contributing citizens. Frank (wife Mary) was an engineer; Miro (wife Karen) a business entrepreneur, Kristine a consumer research executive; Bernadine, an educator; Albin (wife Albina) was a patent attorney and John worked in construction and restoration.

12 of 162

  • From hosting joyous Martinovanje celebrations , teaching the Slovenian language, serving on the Board of TCS, singing traditional Slovenian songs , hosting “Balina” tournaments, and for Miro awarded the title of Honorary Consul for Minnesota, the Medved family have more than given back their gratitude to the Slovenians of Minnesota and remain the backbone of Branch 109.

Festival of Nations

The Twin Cities Slovenians participated in the Festival of Nations, held at the St Paul RiverCentre, from 2008 until it was cancelled due to Covid in 2020.
