The most common reasons students selected schools were proximity, program/major fit, cost/financial aid, reputation/academics, family connections, campus environment, and school culture/spirit. Cal Poly SLO, in particular, was frequently chosen due to a combination of local proximity, strong majors, affordability, and reputation.

GPA & Ranking

RECENTLY APPROVED CHANGES

  • Include courses from a post-secondary institution, a previously attended high school, or an accredited online high school in the GPA calculation
  • Weight all university level transferable courses including dual-enrollment (CCAP and enrichment courses)
  • Calculate normalized GPA every Spring to determine valedictorian and salutatorian
  • Include transfer student courses, regardless if offered at THS, in the normalized GPA
  • Eliminate class rank except in normalized G.P.A. calculation in which valedictorian and salutatorian is based upon
    • Because our THS GPA is only normalized prior to graduation to determine valedictorian/salutatorian, rankings are not accurate and may give students advantages/disadvantages depending on how many total classes were taken during their high school career

University-Bound:How Do Colleges Make Decisions?

  • Courses: A student’s grades in college prep classes remain the most significant factor.
    • Number of A-G college prep
    • Number of honors, AP, community college courses
    • Rigor of senior year schedule
    • Course selection related to major
  • GPA:
    • CSU/UC = 10th-11th A-G courses including community college courses
    • Private and out-of-state = THS cumulative GPA (9th-11th), most request an updated transcript after first semester of senior year
  • Standardized Test Scores: Many colleges will SAT/ACT for placement only, not in admissions decisions
  • Essays/Personal Insight Questions: These are both a measure of the student’s writing ability and a means of learning more about the student’s personal background.
    • Personal Insight Questions for UC application. Students must answer 4 of 8 questions. Tips here
  • Other Factors: Recommendations, personal characteristics, leadership experiences, athletics, special interests, volunteer activities, extra-curricular activities, hobbies. Private schools pay greater attention to personal statements and essays, teacher and counselor recommendations, and the individual talents of applicants.
