See for yourself

Learn new ways to document issues you see in your local environment.

UI feedback:

Three column explanation of what it is should not include links to individual elements. You want people to read the whole text

Text of three column elements should be shorter and ideally have icons representing as much of each step as possible

Join the Community Science movement

These strategies help us work together as a movement for environmental justice.

See for yourself

You’re the expert in your local environment -- describe it.

Connect

Ask questions about your concerns. Interact with others facing similar concerns locally & worldwide.

Produce knowledge

Plan field work. Collect evidence. Analyze results. Share and grow the knowledge base.

Be the change

Talk to your neighbors, advocate together by going to the press, to regulators, or to court.

UI feedback:

“Ask a question” is intimidating to people

Asking people to “Join now” immediately is intimidating. People aren’t sure yet what they are joining.

Consider having one call to action per section on front page

UI feedback:

Incorporate diversity into the model

New Users are not aware there is an online community contributing to the posts.

Online community Is not immediately apparent to the users that this exists. Not visible enough.

Ask questions together

Ask questions together

Starting with the basics is the best way to get connected. Asking questions helps us pool our resources and solve problems cooperatively.

Build a knowledge base

Sharing what we know helps others build on our successes and learn from our failures.

UI feedback:

It is difficult for users to get at what they are trying to find, whether it’s tool kits, cities, events, especially the digital tools.

Digital Tools are difficult to access, Unclear that these exist (attach conversation with Abby & Liz).

Make it easier to get to, minimize the number of steps it takes for someone to reach one of these digital tools, from the appropriate physical DIY tool.

Tools are not easily accessible, especially the digital tools (MapKnitter, Spectral Workbench, Infragram, etc.)

Cannot tell whether you are logged in from Profile icon

Navigation submenu should be viewable on mouseover. Currently loads on click.

Question: what are people using to navigation content? In what contexts are they used and where are they not? That may inform how much to highlight them with different content type

Find a topic in "Get Involved" section should be top item listed.

Navigation submenu item order should be from most newbie/important to least.

Should all the items in navigation submenus be included on this top level? It's worth a review if it hasn't been done in a while. Should the kit link be removed?

Navigation submenus and page titles should match

What does the hor bar in the "Get Involved" menu represent? Should there be two separate menu items?

Search should be on the right in a lower priority position

Help organize your question in a topic using powertags like ‘question:soil’ or ‘question:water’.

Make ‘powertags’ a link to the wiki

A portal? Or a narrative/slideshow?

  • (Narrative for posts upon the map)

Content-driven, or infrastructure-driven?

Compare to existing site.

Narrative styles tend to go full bleed and incorporate “parallax scrolling” -- like this site. So, either no sidebar, or a floating sidebar.

Need text/titling/editorial input.

Or… a “Welcome page” for the project?

One interesting part about the project we’ve developed is that it can be used as a foundation for new storytelling projects, which overlay narratives or new datasets on top of the industrial sites database. Here are some examples; click here to learn how to start your own project.

Post a Question v

Sort by: name | uses | people

Type: all v

Topic pages can list subscriber counts here, but we should make it more visible for varying backgrounds.

This area can be swapped for other content, like Related Tags (see below)

15 of 81

Tags added later. Formatting could even be suppressed and added later (ctrl-B still makes things bold)

Lot of whitespace on the site

This could cycle to show different featured questions, maybe just showing a different one on each page

Goals

Joe: find stories, issues topics we deal with, find who we are, what we do, find their destinations

Liz: same. Topics. Overview of community + non-profit. Find others who are concerned about the same issues

Lis: agree, smthg that says What PL Is, Who PL Is

Jeff: How you fit in? Find people a thing to do.

Show ppl that site content is by a community.

Makes you feel:

Joe: informed, motivated, connected

Liz: same, not overwhelmed, sense of ‘creative direct action’

  • Spirit of inquiry and DIY

Lis: welcomed, engaged

Jeff: like you are among at least some ppl like you (Qs of shared identity)

  • interested, curious

...needs more thought

Gotta have

Joe: Donate link (navbar ok), store link (navbar ok), one-click to ask a first question, a color

Liz: topics/issues ppl care about

Lis: tell ppl what/who PL is, what you can do there/with-PL

Jeff: a thing to do

Gotta get you to

Joe: to find stories about specific topics (i.e. flooding), in regions or with kits

Liz: sitemap, a sense of orientation

Lis: a sense of what’s happening, feel the community there. Show 3-5 cool things: curated or emergent.

Audiences

Joe: Donors, media first time users, returning users

Liz: People who want to know how to get started w/ env. Q, people who want to contribute

Lis: Ppl who want to know what PL is, ppl who want to use a particular tool, ppl who are interested in a kit, ppl who want to find a sub-community

Looks like a print layout, doesnt have full bleed short/wide image bands

Core message: emphasize.

Could drop CTAs

Lot of dense info here, important but doesn’t draw you in to read it

Current happenings, curated

No hierarchy of emphasis

Each section should have a purpose

Would like more current/recent stuff featured higher

Could we do this in a video?

Forefront matchmaking of ppl looking to help or looking for help

3. (optional) Take a screenshot of a site you like and try annotating it with observations of things you think work well, and potential analogues on our site.

1. Brainstorming "sections" for the page based on our mockups. "Who we are" or "Blog" - whatever ideas you have for sections that address some of our goals. Don't worry about how they'd be designed, we're just looking for what distinct content would be represented in some kind of zone on the front page.

2. Brainstorm "copy text" for each section - one sentence, or a title and a sentence. Like:

Joe: yeah but, the People directory is not as useful as Topics for new people finding their way

This might need to move down

Joe: this could be part of nav bar?

Lis: does not think this is right amount of detail for front page -- it’s too much info, we should handle this is navigation

TAKEAWAY: try to resolve topics in nav (in addition to at bottom?)

Agriculture [+], urban [+]

Monitor the urban forest in infrared to detect early signs of distress

Community Projects

Gotta have

Joe: Donate link (navbar ok), store link (navbar ok), one-click to ask a first question

a color

Liz: topics/issues ppl care about

Lis: tell ppl what/who PL is, what you can do there/with-PL

Jeff: a thing to do

Gotta get you to

Joe: to find stories about specific topics (i.e. flooding), in regions or with kits

Liz: sitemap, a sense of orientation

Lis: a sense of what’s happening, feel the community there. Show 3-5 cool things: curated or emergent.

Strongly feature topics, people (3 in 1)

Ask a question

Idea for subsets of "air" "water" "soil" as way to sort tools. Also could sort by cost, etc stuff from Method Template.

Photographic techniques: `photo-monitoring` (is used for timelapse-ish stuff) or `photographic` or `photography` ? (should include microscopy techniques)

Techniques for numerical data: `sensor-data` ?

Lab techniques: `reagent` `sample` `chemistry` `chemical process` `

Color-changing techniques:

People looking for help with an environmental problem.

We offer for them to learn from others who have faced similar environmental problems elsewhere.

How do I connect and what do I do to address my environmental justice issue?

Option 1: Some people will not be able to talk publicly either by preference or because of a lawsuit or targeting. Stevie and Liz will then post. Staff time for this.

People trying to understand what public lab is

Someone looking to connect with a human (to ask a question). Some people will only want/be able to receive via a human. They aren’t going to wayfinding through a website.

One type: In part because of digital literacy. They might be older, they might be in a low resource, high environmental damage situation. They need help fast. And staff responses, with the support of website resources.

→ phone number and standing weekly time is an important Call To Action even though it’s an offramp to a website → put this in rotating hero image thing

Someone looking to ask a question. What are the questions like?

I got a reading from a sensor. What does this mean?

Why do you want to know? What do you want to do with it?

Engage and then provide some information

People looking for urgent calls to respond “armchair activists”

Looking for what cool gear they can buy or make. Who are they? Students? DIYers. Makerspace peeps?

Someone looking to ask a question. What are the questions like?

I want my city council to regulate. What do I do?

Get a plan and study design for collecting evidence.

I’m concerned about something but it’s ill-defined.

Send them to the issue brief to help them to get to clarity and to make it more actionable for Public Lab.

https://publiclab.org/issue-brief

Another type: landed on a deep link into the PL website via a web search or an email chain. Did not go through the front page, did not log in, did not have any onboarding ladder. This happens a lot. VIA TEMPLATE PROJECT Need to standardize calls-to-action, not rely on sidebars because people use them inconsistently

People looking to offer help based on their own interests, maybe domain expertise, or to share a personal story

Funders who we want to impress

User profiles by “what are you trying to do?”

Style guide?

- some layout consistency, but not standard implementation

- text link, button usage guidelines

- consistency for user - where to look?

- [helpful for designers too! And coders!]

- every page is a little different

- main menu navbar 'main pages' should be consistent

- clues about how deep into content you are are violated

- breadcrumby stuff

- examples of successful style guides

- ditch Scenarios in favor of "justifications/issues" that inform style guide components??

- circle back on the question of how to get to Style Guide entries from the justifications/issues Lis identifies

Public Lab

is a community where you can learn -- and teach -- how to investigate environmental concerns.

The Problem

Communities lack access to the tools and techniques needed to participate in decisions being made about their communities, especially when facing environmental hazards.

The Collaboration

We are an open network of community organizers, educators, technologists and researchers working to create low cost solutions for monitoring air, water and land.

Discover, collaborate on, and contribute to locally important matters with the support of a global community.

The Solution

Join us today, as we work together to build and inspire a community of DIY activists and explorers using simple tools to build a growing body of data about our local environments.
