The Pomodoro Technique

David Moawad- Rho Chi PGC Representative

39 of 48

CASE

EZ is a P2 student studying for his MedChem exam taking place tomorrow morning. EZ still has 4 lectures of Dr. Hu to memorize and decides to set out 8 hours for MedChem studying- 2 hours per lecture. Unfortunately, EZ has a short attention span and is easily distracted checking his phone every 5 minutes. It doesn’t help as well that Thursday Night football is on at 7pm and he’s only finished with 1 lecture out of 4. By the end of the night, he has only finished reviewing 2 lectures and is now nervous and unprepared for his exam tomorrow. What can EZ do to save his grade on the next exam?

40 of 48

Who can benefit from this?

  • People who get easily distracted by things around them
  • People who have been given regular hours but have a low productivity rate
  • People who lack focus
  • People who are not motivated enough to complete tasks

What is the Pomodoro Technique?

  • The Pomodoro Technique is a time management system that encourages people to work with the time they have—rather than against it. Using this method, you break your workday into 25-minute chunks separated by five-minute breaks. These intervals are referred to as pomodoros.
  • The name Pomodoro was inspired by the kitchen alarm that Francesco Cirillo used to time himself that was shaped like a Pomodoro, which is Italian for tomato.

41 of 48

Steps of the Pomodoro Technique

Step 1: Task determination

Choose the task that you need to accomplish in a set time frame. This can be done by writing down all the tasks that you have for the day. The best way to do them is to write them down first in the order of importance, and then decompose them into Pomodoros or 25-minute segments.

Step 2: Set a timer for 25 minutes

  • NO PHONES
    • Table clock, or kitchen timer recommended

Step 3: Focus

  • Focus all your energy and focus on the task till the alarm rings
  • NO PHONES

Step 4: Short break

  • Take a short break of 5 minutes which also marks the completion of one Pomodoro or period of 25 minutes. These breaks are not only important for your mind to recover from the last Pomodoro, but also to prepare you for the next one.

Step 5: Long break

  • Every 4 Pomodoros: take a long break of twenty minutes or more
    • Take a power nap, grab a bite, etc.

42 of 48

43 of 48

  • CD6: “Cluster of Differentiation 6”
  • A cell surface glycoprotein on human lymphocytes, including T cells and natural killer (NK) cells.
    • It acts as a costimulator of T cell proliferation via its interaction with the ligand, activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule
  • Becoming an attractive therapeutic target for many autoimmune diseases
    • genetic absence of CD6 or treatment with an anti-CD6 monoclonal antibody (mAb) protects against and even reverses autoimmunity

44 of 48

  • An anti-CD6 mAb termed UMCD6 differs from currently available cancer immunotherapy mAbs in its unique dual ability to stimulate lymphocytes to attack
    • kills cancer cells of many types while preventing other lymphocytes from inducing autoimmune conditions.
  • CD6-targeted antibody-drug conjugates (CD6-ADCs) could be used to treat blood cancers in which the tumor cells themselves express CD6, such as T cell lymphoma, certain chronic lymphocytic leukemias, and NK cell lymphoma.

45 of 48

  • a unique dual effect of UMCD6 to both suppress autoimmune diseases through its effects on effector CD4+ T cells, while also activating the anticancer cytotoxic properties of NK cells and other cytotoxic lymphocytes.
    • creates the potential for an approach to cancer immunotherapy that would, distinct from currently available checkpoint inhibitors, suppress rather than instigate serious autoimmune diseases
      • overcoming the major current limitation to the success of immune checkpoint inhibition in the treatment of human cancer.
  • Developing a CD6-ADC that selectively and directly kills CD6+ tumor cells while sparing normal T and NK cells even when they express CD6.
    • These CD6-targeted agents hold promise as novel anticancer drugs.
