The Crust

  • Crust
    • Outermost layer of Earth
    • Made of cool solid rock
    • Broken into plates that float on the magma from the mantle
    • The part we live on
    • Least Dense of all layers
    • Between 5 and 70 km thick

The Mantle

  • Upper Mantle
    • Called the Lithosphere when joined with the Earth’s crust.
    • Made of very sticky slow moving molten magma.

  • Mantle
    • Liquid magma
    • Convection occurs here and leads to plate tectonics
    • Whole Mantle is 2,900km thick

Inner and Outer Core

  • Outer core
    • Liquid Iron and Nickel
    • 4,400 OF outer edge
    • 6,100 OF near inner core
    • 1,400 km thick

  • Inner core
    • Solid Iron Nickel alloy b/c pressure
    • 5,430 OC 9,800 OF

(equal to suns surface temp)

    • 1,200 km thick
