Reading this book has helped me look at my own life and ask myself if I would do what she did. I admire her for her courage to leave everything for Jesus and risk it all. I was challenged to stand up for my faith like Zakira. She challenged me to not be ashamed and even when life is tough to trust in God. Defying Jihad has helped me realize that I need to share my faith with others and spread the gospel. Finally, Defying Jihad has challenged me to not take the Bible for granted. Zakira didn’t own a Bible for a while but she yearned for one. I have many Bibles at my fingertips but I take the Bible for granted. I am challenged to open my Bible and dig deeper so that when trials come I can stand on the word of God.
I was struck by how brave Kate was. Reflecting upon myself, I don’t think I could’ve brought myself to do the things that she did. Despite these things, she remained faithful, kind, and loving to the people in Afghanistan. She never wavered from her purpose, she knew God had sent her there for a reason. I long to be as steadfast as Kate, to trust in the Lord as she does. Even though the book was merely a summer assignment for English class, I found myself being more impacted than I had anticipated. God truly has done great things.
This book taught me to live differently, in light of Nabeel, by changing the way I view people of other religions. I will no longer see people of other religions as threats to me, rather someone I can become friends with to create discipleship in my own life. I used to have a very one- sided knowledge of Muslims and Islam. A quote that specifically relates this that still hits me hard is, “Effective evangelism requires relationships, there are very few exceptions.” This hit me hard because I am so used to thinking of evangelism as something we do if we are only missionaries in a far off country for a short time. I can be a missionary here by creating relationships with people of other faiths so I can better understand them, and their faith.
Through analyzing diverse narratives, I can deepen my understanding of Muslim culture alongside God's Word, being better equipped to lovingly share the Gospel while also defending the way, the truth and the life of my faith.
