Objective- Students will be able to apply their knowledge of apples to create a life cycle model, develop an opinion after making applesauce and reflect on their learning by making a poster.

Standards-

SC.O.K.2.02 Observe and describe the movement, growth and changes in plants and animals.

SC.O.1.1.03 Demonstrate curiosity, initiative and creativity by questioning observations of changes in the environment (e.g., life cycles, motion of celestial objects, or sun and shadow).

Lesson Summary

Based on the folkways recording “Generational Love for Little Green Apple Keeps Heirloom from Disappearing” students will learn about the life cycle of an apple.Students will create a life cycle. Then students will engage in making applesauce as discussed in the recording. The recording guides the listener as they hear about the sourness of the apples. Through this process students will develop an opinion on the taste of the applesauce and create a poster.

Teacher To-Do List & Materials

Read through entire lesson and listen to broadcast prior to students’ listening.

Materials:

Early Summer Apples (If available) Any variety of apple will work

Crockpot, Applesauce materials (recipe below)

Life Cycle Model materials- Paper plates or large construction paper, arrows cut out( the students cut out some), and clay or model magic. We used model magic and real apple seeds.

Poster materials

Prep:

If apples are early summer apples they do not need to be peeled, other kinds of apples will need to be peeled ahead of time.
