Unit 1 ● Lesson 3

Let’s make, compare, and interpret data displays.

We will be able to graphically represent the data collected and critique the representations of others so that we can interpret data and form inferences based on research and analysis.

3.2 Activity: Data Displays

You can graphically represent the data I collected and critique the representations of others.

Let's work with data.

  • First, you'll create data displays.
  • Then, you'll interpret the data.
  • Finally, we will have a class discussion.

Wall whiteboards

One set of questions per group (from yesterday). Each group chooses one of the statistical questions for which students already collected numerical data. As a group, on the wall whiteboards:

  1. Create a dot plot, histogram, and box plot to display the distribution of the data.
  2. Write 3 comments that interpret the data.
  3. Once everyone is complete, take a room tour of the displays. As you visit each display, be able to summarize the information in the displays.

Why Graphical Representations?

A large school system summarizes the number of teachers at 51 schools in the area.

  • minimum: 20 teachers
  • maximum: 110 teachers
  • median: 65 teachers
  • Q1: 40
  • Q3: 95
