The presentation herein is for the purpose of making it easier to comprehend the difference between the bodies that work in unison for the smooth running of the Nursing profession with their respective and unique separate mandates.

DEFINITION OF NCK

THE NURSING COUNCIL OF KENYA IS THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE NURSING PROFESSION ESTABLISHED UNDER THE NOW VERY FAMILIAR ACT OF PARLIAMENT CAP 257 LAWS OF KENYA.

MANDATE Make provision of training ,registration, enrolment and Licensing of nurses, regulate the Nurses conduct and ensure best practice to the public.

FUNCTIONS OF NCK

  • ESTABLISH AND IMPROVE STANDARDS OF ALL BRANCHES OF NURSING PROFESSION IN ALL THEIR ASPECTS AND SAFE GUARD THE INTEREST OF NURSES.
  • MAKE PROVISION OF TRAINING AND INSRUCTION FOR PERSON SEEKING REGISTRATION OR ENROLMENT UNDER THIS ACT.
  • PRESCRIBE AND REGULATE SYLLABI OF INSTRUCTIONS AND COURSES OF TRAINING OF PERSONS SEEKING REGISTRATION AND ENROLMENT UNDER THE NURSES ACT.
  • PRESCRIBE UNIFORM TO BE WON BY PERSONS REGISTERED AND LINCESED UNDER THE ACT ETC

DEFINITION OF NNAK ;

NNAK INITIALS STAND FOR NATIONAL NURSES ASSOCIATION OF KENYA, IT IS A NURSES PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION BODY REGISTERED UNDER THE REGISTRARS OF SOCIETY AS A WELFARE ASSOCIATION.

MANDATE; To promote the socio-economic development of Nurses, ensuring high standards of Nursing education and research in collaboration with others

FUNCTIONS

  • Supporting a high standard of Nursing ethics, conduct and practice which is organized and functions unrestricted by consideration of nationality, race, creed, politics, sex or social status.
  • Assisting whenever possible members who by reason of Adversity or ill Health are in need of help.
  • Promoting Nursing and maintaining honors ,interest and practice of all aspects of the profession as a whole.
  • Stimulating and encouraging Nursing Research.
  • Promoting co-operation between Nnak and other National and international professional bodies as well as the government.

DEFINITION OF KNUN

KNUN INITIALS STAND FOR KENYA NATIONAL UNION OF NURSES WHICH WAS REGISTERED IN 2013 AS A TRADE UNION IN KENYA UNDER THE PROVISION OF THE LABOUR RELATIONS ACT NO 14 OF THE 2007 LAWS OF KENYA.

MANDATE;

The Union exists to establish a democratic platform upon which Nurses address their concerns by engaging their employers in dialogue and employment agreements in order to improve nurses working conditions which are aimed at improving the quality of Nursing care to the public

KNUN FUNCTIONS;

THE NURSING UNION PROTECTS, ADVOCATES FOR NURSES USING COLLECTIVE ACTION TO MAKE DEMANDS ON BEHALF OF MEMBERS.TO COVER FOR THE FOLLOWING AREAS

  • Decent wages through decent collective bargaining agreements and dispute resolutions.
  • Union ensures job security and safe ,respectful workplace environments .
  • Fights for fair work scheduling hours.

  • Establishing sound relations for the workers and employers through promotion and protection of freedom of expression and association mostly demonstrated during strikes and picketing.
