Volunteer Specification

  • Capable, calm (tolerant/patient) and thorough

  • Good organisational skills

  • Ability to dedicate a minimum of 4 hours per week

  • Ability to commit a minimum of three months (ideally longer)

  • Sense of humour and perspective

  • Ability to encourage and support children and vulnerable adults

  • Ability to communicate effectively

FOODBANKS

We run four sessions across four centres weekly:

  • Tuesdays: New Covenant Church, 506-510 Old Kent Road, SE1 5BA 11.30 to 2pm

  • Wednesdays: St. Paul’s Church, 4 Lorrimore Square, SE17 3QU 11:30am-1:30pm

  • Thursdays: Spring Community Hub, 161 Benhill Road, Camberwell, London, SE5 7LL 9.15am to 1.30pm)

  • Fridays: Spring Community Hub, 86- 88 Vestry Road , Camberwell, London, SE5 8PQ 9.45am to 1.30pm

FOODBANK ROLES ACROSS ALL OUR CENTERS

Food bank session leads

    • Experience in customer service or dealing with a diverse range of people.
    • Good listening skills, ability to communicate well with confidence and when handing enquiries.
    • Awareness of the Welfare system and circumstances that may bring people to our service.
    • A DBS check will be required

Food Administrator (one role)

Support efficient operation of the food bank responsible providing information to supporters; clients, and partner agencies via phone and email, and providing administrative support to the warehouse,delivery, and foodbank teams. DBS required

FOODBANK ROLES ACROSS ALL OUR CENTERS

Volunteer referral team (Spanish and/or English speaking)

    • First point of contact for guests and referral agencies

    • Liaise with referral agencies and partners, assess guest’s needs, identify the most appropriate programme for those referred to the food bank team

    • Work closely with hub manager and food bank team

    • Review and monitor guest progress, identify changes in circumstances, develop action plans and signpost for further support internally or externally

    • A DBS check will be required

WAREHOUSE ROLES ACROSS ALL OUR CENTERS

Volunteer Warehouse Assistant

    • Work with the community to pack food packages, stock taking, unloading deliveries and replenishing stock
    • Organising the stock, making sure the food is

in date

    • Decant big packages into smaller units
    • Keep food bank clean and tidy
    • Work closely with food bank coordinator/warehouse coordinator
    • Make food packages for service users according to their requests

Volunteer Delivery Drivers

    • Looking for committed delivery drivers who will support the food bank team in delivering parcels Monday to Friday
    • Follow procedures required to give the best service to our guests.

Clothes Bank @ 86-88 Vestry Road

SE5 8PQ

Our clothes bank provides clothes for everyone from age 2 upwards. We are open on Tuesdays - Term time only 9.30-12.30pm

Clothes Bank Assistant

    • Sort clothes parcels; pack clothes parcels; sort donations into specified storage groups; possible collecting donations from pickup points or donors unable to drop off
    • Customer service; good organisation; listening and communication skills; non-judgemental and friendly attitude.

Back to Work (B2W)

Remote and/or in person - meets virtually every Saturday 11:30m to 12:30pm

Assistant review and admin team member

    • Work as part of a team with other volunteers providing eg. employment; housing; immigration; welfare; health; wellbeing; training,;personal and professional development advice and support
    • Offer support in communities that do not usually have access to mental health advice due to language barriers or simply not knowing how the UK system works.
    • Conduct initial assessments and requirements for those referred to B2W.
    • A DBS check will be required

Remote and/or in person - meets virtually every Saturday 11:30m to 12:30pm

Data Analysts

    • Work with the rest of the B2W team and with the Project Coordinator
    • Manage the content; format and overall quality of client data
    • Present data using visual elements e.g. bar charts and graphs
    • Report results back to the team
    • A DBS check will be required

Employment Caseworker

    • Provide advice and support to guide, encourage and support participants to overcome barriers to employment and achieve realistic job goals.
    • Re-build guest confidence, self-esteem and resilience
    • Work on both a 1-1 and group basis
    • Manage a caseload of participants, managing their journey to employment
    • Work as part of a team to ensure smooth delivery of the service and excellent client care
    • Take on feedback from a variety of stakeholders and contribute to innovative changes and adaptations to service delivery
    • Ensure records are kept up to date and accessible to other team members
    • Contribute to our online library of employment related resources, compiled and updated by the team
    • We work with a large number of people from Latin America and are particularly keen to hear from volunteers who speak Spanish
    • A DBS check will be required

Housing Caseworker

    • Provide a high quality, in-depth, impartial and confidential advice to clients on a range of issues relating to housing/ employment casework.
    • Recognise debt implications on housing cases and ensure that clients receive appropriate advice and assistance where necessary.
    • Liaise with 3rd parties as agreed and adhering to SCH standards and agreements
    • Consider options and identify the best possible course of action
    • Carry out research where necessary to find out more in-depth information
    • Provide practical help such as writing letters, making phone calls and helping clients fill in forms
    • A DBS check will be required

Mental Health Advisor Caseworker

    • Working in a team with other volunteers who provide support with employment, housing, immigration, welfare, health, well being, training, personal and professional development
    • Provide advice and casework to clients who are experiencing mental health problems such as accessing treatment and care: also, offering this service to friends and family
    • Ensure smooth delivery of the service and excellent client care.
    • Continue to develop your knowledge of mental health and welfare benefits to meet the needs of the service
    • Take on feedback from a variety of stakeholders and contribute to innovative changes and adaptations to service delivery
    • Ensure records are kept up to date and accessible to other team members and that casework is maintained
    • Input into the quality and publication or mental health resources
    • A DBS check will be required

Meets virtually Every Saturday at 11:30m to 12:30pm

  • Money Caseworker
    • Provide advice to clients who are experiencing money problems
    • Equip people with the right knowledge and skills to manage their personal finances
    • Complete the debt advice process with clients by providing advice and casework on a range of debt solutions and strategies
    • Provide advice and casework on welfare benefits including benefit checks and helping with initial claims, mandatory reconsiderations and appeals
    • Continue to develop knowledge of welfare benefits and money advice to meet the needs of the service
    • Take feedback from a variety of stakeholders and contribute to innovative changes and adaptations to service delivery
    • Ensure records are kept up to date and accessible to others
    • Contribute to our online library of money related resources
    • A DBS check will be required

Project Administrator

    • Add new clients to the project database and spreadsheet
    • Assign clients to volunteers
    • Keep track of unresponsive clients and ensure the database is kept up-to-date
    • Update the volunteers list with essential information
    • Maintain the upkeep of B2W library and project resources
    • Take minutes of meetings
    • Assist in ad hoc projects / provide general administrative and project support.
    • Work in an inclusive way, embracing our culture and values
    • Put those we serve at the heart of everything we do
    • Consistently deliver high quality services to support our communities and beneficiaries
    • IT literate, strong administrative and organisation skills
    • A DBS check will be required

ACTIVITY CAMP

The Activity Camps project is primarily aimed at families with young children (0-16 years) experiencing food insecurity who run the risk of going without food during the school holidays. It is also open to the wider community.

Volunteers are required for:

  • Work alongside our Holiday Kids Club leads, helping to distribute activity packs and packed lunches for children
  • Keep a record of the families who collect the food and activity packs

Kids Holiday Club Supervisors (9:30am to 2:00pm)

    • Similar to the Holiday Club Assistant role
    • Notify or report any potential safeguarding concerns to the Holiday Club Lead
    • Be a part of the holiday club during out of term time
    • Join in activities including creative workshops, fitness sessions, outdoor activities, including sewing seeds and learning about pollinating
    • A DBS check will be required

Summer Holiday Club Volunteer ((9:30am to 2:00pm)

  • Creative and enjoy working with children and their parents/carers to help facilitate fun activity sessions
  • Work face-to-face with the children and their parents/carers registered with the club
  • Facilitate activities for Parents/Carers and their children
  • Set up equipment and making sure all areas are safe
    • Ensure the provision offers a safe and stimulating environment
    • Supervise lunchtime refreshments for the children and their families
    • Ensure the agreed standard of hygiene and cleanliness is always maintained
    • Follow guidelines and procedures for Safeguarding in accordance with Spring Community Hub policies and procedures
    • Provide appropriate basic first aid and record any incidents according to school policy and procedures
    • Previous experience of working in a childcare environment is desirable but not essential as all relevant training will be given
    • A DBS check will be required

After School Club Assistant

    • Term time only, Monday, Wednesday & Thursday 3-6pm
    • Work alongside the After School Club leads, helping to set up and set down activities
    • Supervise children, maintain order, discipline and good manners, model good practice
    • Maintaining registers and ensuring they are regularly updated
    • Ensuring appropriate handover to parents or their representatives
    • Ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and that resources are correctly stored after children have departed
    • A DBS check will be required

    • Support the holiday club during lunchtime
    • Work with the Holiday Club team while schools are closed for the summer

    • Check for food allergies and food intolerances before food is served
    • Support the planning and preparation of healthy/cultural food
    • Serve meals in a presentable/attractive manner, provide age appropriate cutlery

Spring Kitchen Catering Assistant

    • Plan and prepare healthy, cultural food for children and families during the holidays
    • Helping to distribute activity packs and packed lunches for children and families, and assisting the running of afternoon kid’s activity sessions
    • Serve meals to our guests in a presentable manner
    • To notify or report any safeguarding concerns to the Holiday Club Lead
    • Ensuring children and families have a balanced diet, eating healthy, freshly cooked meals

Spring Up Women’s Drop-in Sessions Assistant

We offer women’s drop-in sessions every Tuesday 10-12 noon to share skills, build confidence and offer community and new friendships. From sewing classes to Course with WEA . and we use these sessions to cope with serious issues like mental health and domestic violence.

    • Set for the day for the smooth running of the session, tidy up after the session finishes
    • Ensuring registration process is completed by each guest accessing the session
    • Comforting and supporting the guest during the session when the need arise
    • Being a good listener, assisting the facilitator
    • Sort and prepare material ready for the session online and face-to-face
    • Organising the refreshment for the day i.e. making tea and coffee
    • Take stock ofr any item or paperwork needed for the effective running of the session
    • Doing weekly reports, ensuring feedback is collected
    • Ensuring all case studies and testimonies are collected

Spring Social SuperMarket (Triple’S) - A SHOP FOR FOOD, FRIENDS AND ADVICE

Our Social Supermarket caters for those who are struggling with rising costs, want to purchase culturally appropriate food at reasonable prices and are looking for a place where you can get bargain for money.

DAYS:

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays

Location : 86 88 Vestry Road

Time: 9:00a.m.–3:00p.m.

Social Supermarket Assistant

  • Help customers with their food shopping needs,
  • Process Payments
  • Keep the supermarket neat and presentable.
  • Restock the shelves
  • Checking customers in and out
  • Working on a point-of-sale system and closing the till at the end of the shift
  • Assist customers with their shopping
  • Receiving and unpacking deliveries
  • A DBS check will be required

Camberwell Connects

  • This is a weekly programme aimed at engaging and entertaining senior citizens aged over 55
  • It takes place every Wednesday from 11:00am to 1:00pm and is held at 86-88 Vestry Road, SE5 8PQ
  • Our goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for the seniors to enjoy their time
  • Activities include talking and playing games
  • A hot lunch is provided

This volunteering is subjected to a DBS CHECK

  • Camberwell Connect Assistant - Every Wednesday 10:30am to 1:30pm
    • Set up for the smooth running of the session, tidy up after the session finishes

    • Be a good listener and assist the facilitator
    • Organising the refreshment for the day i.e. making tea and coffee and tidy up after lunch

Christmas related volunteering opportunities

Variety of christmas related activities from 9th-23rd December 2024 including:

    • Bucket collections at Morrisons in Camberwell
    • Decorating christmas hampers (cardboard boxes)
    • Packing christmas hampers
    • Wrapping christmas presents
    • Christmas Party - set up the hall
    • Volunteer in shifts during the day distributing hampers and gifts
    • Cleaning up hall at the end of the day
    • Distributing hampers to those not able to attend

Range of administrative roles

As Spring Community Hub continues to expand, there will be a range of interesting volunteer administrative roles

    • Volunteers will be embedded within specific projects/activities
    • The administrative role will be to support individual projects/activities and project leads so that they are effectively and efficiently run and delivered
    • This could involve contact with external agencies and clients
    • Examples include administration support to holiday clubs, christmas activities and the social supermarket

Commitments and Expectations…

As a volunteer we ask that you:

  • Complete your volunteering activities with dedication and commitment - 4 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months
  • Sign the Volunteer Agreement form (embed link here)
  • Attend the Virtual monthly team meeting related to your role

E.g

  • Food Bank - meets the second Friday of the month @ 6pm to 7pm
  • Holiday Club meets the Friday prior to start of Holiday Club Activities @ 6pm to 7pm
  • B2W meets every Saturday from 11:30am to 12:30pm
  • Maintain confidentiality of Spring Community Hub activity, the people in our care, our team and our procedures
  • Arrive on time and give 48 hours notice if you are no longer able to carry out your shift
  • Let your volunteer manager know if you are having any problems or if you have any complaints, concerns or feedback.
