Mason Middle School students conversed with students in France earlier today to celebrate the European Day of Language in Middle French Teacher Rob Napier’s class. FWCD students posed their questions in French, asking the students such things as their names, what they ate for breakfast, what their favorite subject is, and who their favorite artist is. The French students then responded in their native language. Tables were turned, and FWCD students were asked questions in English by the French students. They asked: What do you do in your free time? What is your favorite school subject? Do you like your schedule, why or why not? Who is your favorite YouTuber? What video games do you play? What did they learn? There were many more connections and similarities as the students laughed and “ah-ha-ed” at the answers. #FWCD #FlyHigher
FWCD’s French program recently was awarded a cultural grant to bolster its collection of French movies. These seventh-graders are excited about the new DVDs, which include a mixture of genres from recent classics such as "Les Choristes" and "Belle et Sébastien" to wonderful animated tales like "Une Vie de Chat" and "Le Tableau." Middle School French Teacher Rob Napier hosts a French Movie Night on the last Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in Middle School Room 107. Everyone is welcome. Middle School and Lower School French students celebrated Mardi Gras throughout the afternoon on Tuesday, February 13. Activities and games included a bilingual play, face painting, a French café with a DJ, origami, Bingo, Twister, a roulette wheel, a beanbag toss, the always-delicious cookie walk, a lollipop tree and a basketball toss.
The custom of Lower School and Middle School recognizing Mardi Gras together began in 1992. Middle School students take on all the preparatory working, including the planning and decorating. In addition, they are assigned responsibilities, such as guiding the Lower School students and leading various activities in the booths. The faculty emphasizes to the Middle School students that they have complete confidence in them to act as leaders. On this day, parents are not expected to accompany or lead their child that day. Rather, they are asked to permit the Middle School hosts to exhibit their leadership skills.
The fun activities serve to develop leadership skills among the Middle School students, while simultaneously entertaining the younger Falcons! It’s a win, win for all!

It provided a great opportunity for FWCD falcons to practice their French and leadership skills while earning community service hours.
French Movie Night

FWCD Middle School and Lower School students enjoyed the movie Adama, a French animated drama film (with English subtitles). The movie focuses on a 12-year-old boy living in a remote village in West Africa who travels to the battlefields of France during WWI to find his brother. The viewing was held in conjunction with the Alliance Française de Dallas, whose new director, Patricia Beausoone, introduced the movie. Rob Napier, Middle School

Darius Carquillat, Abigail Proell and Vail Dickey won first place School Sweepstakes as a team at the Concours du Texas (Texas French Contest), which took part at Highland Park High School earlier this month. The contest allows students from French programs across the North Texas area to compete at a variety of levels in four areas: vocabulary, grammar, dictation and culture. Abigail also placed third overall after coming in first in the dictation category, third in grammar and third in culture. Vail was third place in both the diction and vocabulary categories. #FWCD #FlyHigher
Former Student Visits Classmates

Former FWCD student Rebecca Attias visited with Rob Napier’s eighth-grade French students to help them prepare for their speaking exam. Attias, who currently lives in Geneva, Switzerland, attended FWCD until the end of seventh grade in 2018-19. She is back in Fort Worth with her family for the holidays and attended class at FWCD this week. In addition to helping prepare the students for their speaking exam, Attias shared a bit about life in Geneva and helped the seventh-graders later in the day. “It was great to see Rebecca again,” Napier said. “We miss her and wish her all the best!”
The new French section in the Moncrief Library is open. Recognizing the need for French students to be able to access books in the target language, Middle School Librarian Kim Gardner and Middle School French Teacher Rob Napier were able to source a range of books to cover a variety of tastes from Le Petit Prince to Astérix. Three Middle School students’ artwork was selected to represent Fort Worth Country Day in the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) poster contest. Student artists are Xixi Hillman ’22, Isabella Gutierrez ’22 and Seth Mayhue ’23. The poster contest is for students of French in both public and private schools in grades K-8. In celebration of the AATF convention in Martinique (the French-speaking Caribbean island), the theme focuses on the island’s nickname, “Martinique: L'île aux fleurs,” which translates to Martinique: Island of Flowers.” Winning posters will be on display at the convention in July.

Middle School Students Earn French Writing Honors

Seventh-graders Andrea Lessmann, Isabella Sweeney and Abigail Proell were honored with the 2019 Jeunes Amis du Français (JAF) Creative Writing Award from the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). The girls’ entries will be published in the spring 2019 Élan, the online official publication of the Société Honoraire de Français - Jeunes Amis du Français.
The contest entailed students watching “The poet who painted with his words - Geneviève Emy” to learn the history of Guillaume Apollinaire and the poem-picture, written portrait, thoughts-drawing that he created in his calligrammes. Contest participants then crafted their own calligrams with as few as 30 words and as many as 50 words. A calligram is a design in which the letters of a word are rearranged to form a decorative pattern or figure (Merriam-Webster online).
Rob Napier, Middle School French Teacher, was allowed to submit a maximum of three sections. “I love to see our students take the language they have learned and run with it. This contest offered students an opportunity to not only be creative linguistically, but also to show off their artistic side,” Napier said. “I was delighted with the girls’ efforts and am glad they’re being recognized and rewarded. Bravo!”
“We extend our congratulations to you and your students,” wrote Abbe Guillet, President SHF/JAF on behalf of the JAF Creating Writing Contest Selection Committee. “How fortunate they are to have a teacher willing to take the time to encourage them to prepare an entry for a national writing contest.”
In another AATF French writing contest, five students – eighth-graders Blaine Barker, Lillian Buchanan and Seth Mayhue; and seventh-graders Caleb Giroir and Marco Olmos – were given certificates for their participation. The students wrote about “Mon français, mon avenir.” (My French, my future).
FWCD students Arlie Sathyamoorthy and Clara Cimo created posters for a National French Week contest spearheaded by the American Association of French Teachers. Arlie earned first place, and Clara was runner-up. The poster contest theme was Notre Dame. National French Week is a weeklong celebration of all things French that takes place annually in November in schools, communities and AATF chapters across the U.S. The goal is to take French out of the classroom and show what students know and can do with the language. #FWCD #FlyHigher

Happy Bastille Day! Akin to the United States’ 4th of July, July 14 marks the beginning of republican democracy and the end of tyrannical rule for France FWCD’s robust French program has a lot to celebrate. This year, two Upper School students earned Platinum Medals in the Concours National for their 100 percent performances, the Kindergarten Rodeo was featured on French television, students visited Fort Worth and the School from Thonon-les-Bains, and two more Upper School students are enrolled in a 22-day French immersion program at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. The 2017-18 academic year promises to be even more exciting for the French program, culminating in a week-long trip to Canada next June visiting Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. Seventh-graders in French class are pen-paling with students at Jeanne d'Arc school in Champagnole, France. The first letters they received from their French friends were introductory descriptions. Our students enjoyed learning about their new friends, deciphering French handwriting and identifying their pen pal from a photo sent by their English teacher. In letters back to them, our students described their homes. Middle School French Teacher Rob Napier is hoping the students will exchange letters at least once a month, which allows the students to practice what they learn in class, as well as connect via FaceTime and through videos. #FWCD #FlyHigher

Welcome to Fort worth maire fournier
Fourteen FWCD students and Upper School French Teacher Andréanne Annis welcomed Jean-Paul Fournier, Mayor of Nîmes, (pronounced NEEM) France, to Fort Worth in February. Annis served as a translator/interpreter for a Fort Worth Sister Cities International (FWSCI) visit with a French delegation from Nîmes last year. “We welcomed the delegation with a beautiful banner designed by Isabel Garza [’21], who united the logos and the architectures of both Sister Cities and flowers,” Annis said. “Our students showered them with lovely statements in French about the benefits of uniting these two cities, which provides additional educational as well as cultural opportunities and commerce.”
This partnership came to fruition as the result of a three-year process that started with a visit to Nîmes by a Fort Worth search team in 2017. The newly minted relationship has already proven fruitful, as a youth delegation of 21 high school students from Nîmes also arrived in Fort Worth on February 15 for a 10-day educational exchange hosted by Fort Worth Country Day and the Fort Worth ISD World Languages Institute. Eleven students from Nîmes shadowed FWCD students from February 15-24. Two teachers are also visiting and being hosted by Annis.
Upper School students enjoyed hosting 11 students and two teachers on campus for the two weeks. In addition to Annis, the following students and their families hosted French friends: Sydney Cyprian ’22, Izzy Guiterrez ’22, Karina Cedillo ’20, Faith Darrow ’21, Lauryn Roberts ’21, Mary Elizabeth Mitchell ’22, Kendall Lehman ’22, Karli Reed ’21, Erin Fishman ’21, Andrew Nober ’21 and Henry Lynn ’21.
For Annis, it was an honor to serve on the Nîmes committee and to welcomes exchange students to campus to learn more about American life and Fort Worth. Middle School French Teacher Rob Napier also served on the committee. “Our French-speaking community in Fort Worth is quite vibrant and thankful for more possibilities for our students and the citizens of Fort Worth going to beautiful Nîmes in the future,” Annis said. “It was also such a joy to host our student and teacher guests for two weeks. We created such wonderful memories together including enjoying a cooking class [tacos, etc.] and a great time filled with singing and laughter prior to attending the dress rehearsal of our amazing musical Chicago!”
Fournier, along with an official delegation from Nimes arrived in Fort Worth on February 12, touring all the best Fort Worth has to offer, including a visit to the Fort Worth Stockyards, the Kimbell Art Museum, the Bureau of Engraving and Alcon (due to an interest of Nîmes to develop business relations in the eye care industry).
This exchange endeavor was yet another opportunity provided to FWCD students and families by the Center for International Studies (CIS). “Hosting international guests is a great way for our students and families to develop cross-cultural skills, while being able to project a positive image of Americans to our guests,” said Stephen Blan, Director of the CIS. “Each person is able to put a face to a "foreign" group and develop genuine friendships. Our students certainly forged friendships over these two weeks. I look forward to them keeping in touch.”
