Notes for Teachers

  • This lesson is designed for K - 1st grade students.

Context: different geometric shapes we can find in our solar system.

  • The lesson is based on geometric shapes and we can find them everywhere from the classroom, home, pictures, and videos.

List of Materials

Standards

1.P3U1.3 Plan and carry out investigations which demonstrate how equal forces can balance objects and how unequal forces can push, pull, or twist objects, making them change their speed, direction, or shape.

1.E1U1.5 Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the properties of Earth materials and investigate how humans use natural resources in everyday life.

1.G.A.1 Distinguish between defining attributes (triangles are closed and 3 sided) versus non-defining attributes (color, orientation, overall size) for two-dimensional shapes; build and draw shapes that possess defining attributes.

K.P2U2.2 Design and evaluate a tool that helps people extend their senses.

K.E2U1.5 Observe and ask questions about patterns of the motion of the sun, moon, and stars in the sky.

K.G.A.1 Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.

Agenda

  • 5 minutes Allow students time to discuss what Geometric shapes are.create a KWL chart.
  • 5 minutes Give the definition of Geometric shapes and examples you see in the classroom.
  • 30 minutes Show videos to the right.
  • 10 minutes Students will draw/write down geometric shapes they seen in the videos.

  • 10 minutes classroom discussion on what they learned and make any changes to KWL chart.

Geometric Shapes

Geometric Shapes can be defined as figure or area closed by a boundary which is created by combining the specific amount of curves, points, and lines.

Intro/Driving Question/Opening

Do you know the different geometric shapes and can you compare them to different objects?

Hands-on Activity Instructions

  • Students will work individually.
  • After watching the videos, the student will use the images on the right for their assignment.
  • Students will draw pictures of solar system objects they saw in the video that represent shapes on the right. Under each picture they will label the shape it is.
  • Next, we will have a classroom discussion and share our ideas and drawings with each other.
  • Lastly, the students will have time to draw more pictures from the discussion.

Assessment

Allow students 10-15 minutes:

    • Allow students to get construction paper. Give them time to draw objects they seen on the videos and pictures.
    • Direct students to draw what they seen in the videos of geometric shapes on their paper and label the shape.
    • Encourage students to label, use good drawing shapes, and to keep each picture separated.

Differentiation

  • Allow students to verbalize their knowledge /understanding using matching pictures/descriptions.
  • Allow students more time to work.
  • Allow students to watch the videos again on geometric shapes and the solar system.

Remediation

Extension/Enrichment

  • Allow students to read stories or watch more videos on geometric shapes and compare them to objects we see everyday.
  • Allow students to write/draw a story using geometric shapes and the solar system.
