An IEAT-Informed Synthesis of CSUCI’s DEI PrioritiesFraming Question: Will proposed IEAP initiatives address these needs?

  • Learning outcomes: Are DEI values baked into our curricular and co-curricular learning outcomes? If so, they’re baked into everything we are doing.
  • Equity gaps: What initiatives are we implementing to close equity gaps? We need to disaggregate data. What factors are contributing to equity gaps? How do we look at data to target interventions?
  • Belonging: How are we communicating DEI values, physically? We need affinity spaces and programming to help center historically marginalized students.
  • Administrative barriers: Do all policies and procedures align with DEI values?
  • Diverse workforce: How can we more effectively attract, hire, and retain a diverse workforce?
  • Diverse student body: How are we supporting student success? It’s not just about recruiting.
  • Individual growth: How do we ensure our people have opportunities to continue in their own development in understanding DEI work? Are we challenging ourselves in safe, difficult spaces for continuous self reflection and growth?

Origins of the IEAP Framework (2021)

The IEAP Framework synthesizes and organizes four specific documents authored through the Office of the President:

  1. Strategic Initiatives (2018-2023)
  2. Racial Justice: A Commitment to Action (Summer 2020)
  3. 7-Point Framework for Realizing Racial Justice (Fall 2020)
  4. President’s Advisory Committee on Inclusive Excellence (PACIE) Recommendations (Fall 2020)

From IEAP Framework (Spr-Sum21) to IEAP #1 (Spr22-Spr23)

DEI Inventory & Gap Analysis (Spr-Sum21)

IEATs: (1) create a cross-divisional inventory of DEI activities and accomplishments in their respective areas; and (2) pilot the PACIE’s Equity Lens Framework (ELF) to identify gaps.

Propose IEAP Activities (F21)

IEATs draft Inclusive Excellence Action Plan (IEAP) initiatives for their area, identifying deliverables, priorities, timelines, and metrics for evaluating success.

Develop IEAP Proposals (F21)

Cabinet: (1) seeks PACIE feedback on proposed IEAP initiatives; (2) identifies which initiatives can be funded within division and which require new $$; (3) develops proposals.

Evaluate, Award & Implement (Sp22-Sp23)

SRPC uses IEAP Rubric to evaluate proposals and recommend funding allocations. Interim President Yao makes awards by February 11, 2022, and CSUCI’s first IEAP is created with a funding period of Spr22-Spr23.

Three critical ideas:

We can’t do everything at once. Sometimes, less really is more. We must ensure that we select the most impactful activities for new funding and/or for reallocation of resources.

We cannot allow ourselves to lose our focus or our energy for this essential work. With the IEAP, we institutionalize the marathon – not the sprint – begun years ago at CI through the work of so many individuals.

1

2

3

We cannot claim to have achieved anything IEAP-related, yet. But we commit to DEI values and the long-term learning and critical engagement they require. One-time funding ($650K) to address systemic racial and social injustice is insufficient. But with IEAP 1 (Spr22-Spr23), we are on the road to institutionalizing an action-oriented commitment to the values of DEI – with Cabinet-level ownership and accountability.
