  • Testing your new Tag (This slide is only if it wasn’t working for you yet)
  • If you already see the 1 user on your page, you are done.
    • IMPORTANT If you’re not seeing the active number of users on your site, you have to give google permissions (they recently updated their Terms of Service). Please follow the steps below:
    • Click on “admin” in Google Analytics (on the left hand side)
    • Go to “Account Settings”,
    • Scroll down and Accept the new Privacy Policy and click “Save”
    • You should now see the live users on your page in Google Analytics

If it’s still not working, this is the process that you will run through for troubleshooting for all the tags we will be implementing.

  • Is the snippet on the Wordpress website installed between the <head> and </head> text? If not, it won’t work. Also check if you clicked the “Update” button in wordpress.
  • Click on your Tag. Is there a trigger connected to the tag? If not, add the All Page View trigger.
  • Check if you filled in the correct Google Analytics Tracking ID (looks like this). Note: you will have a different number there! Sometimes people use the Tracking ID from the demo account we used for the scavenger hunt earlier.
  • Did you publish your tag? This is crucial! If you haven’t clicked Publish yet, it’s not live on your website yet.

The biggest issue here is that it sometimes takes a minute for the event tracking to come through. In the meanwhile check the following:

  • Did you publish your tag? In Google Tag Manager go to the top right and click on Publish (or “Verzenden” in Dutch). Otherwise the changes you just made aren’t live yet on the website.
  • Sometimes it happens that it won’t work if you have an old incognito window still open. Make sure to close all incognito windows and then open a new one.
  • To make absolutely sure that it’s not working, try it through your phone. Navigate to gtYOURNUMBER.shop.growthtribe.co in your phone browser and click on some of the links. Watch if the events come in in Google Analytics.

  • Part 2 : Add Variables

We’re now tracking clicks, but we don’t have any “Variables” set up yet. The event you send will always be Click (for the category) and Mouse Click (for the action). You need to identify different clicks from each other and the actions associated with them. For example, if the user clicks on the “Shop” menu, you should set the action to be “Shop” and not “Mouse Click”. For this, you are going to create a variable, and send it to Google Analytics.

  • Click on “Workspace” on the top menu
  • Click on “Variables” on the left menu
  • Click on “Configure”

This is the list of variables you can use for now by default. You should add some in order to have more control of the text we are going to send as an Action.

  • Select “Click Text” and “Click Target” → → →

  • Go to Tags on the left menu
  • Click on the last tag you created, Click Event → Edit the Tag
  • For Action, remove the text “Mouse Click”
  • Click on the little icon on the right
  • Select Click Text
  • You should have this → → →
  • Click “Save”
  • Then click “Submit”
  • Add a Version name & Click “Publish”
