Why Do a Community Walk?

  • Observation is a skill! We make observations every day, even when we don’t realize it. With practice and guidance, students can learn to observe more scientifically.
  • Gather information through photos and field notes.
  • To build community among students and learn about the Renaissance neighborhood.
  • To meet local leaders working to make a difference in the community.

  • Greenspaces: What do you notice?
  • Human-made surroundings: What do you notice? Housing? Businesses? Roads? Street Lights?
  • What do you see that impacts the environment?
  • Who do you think makes the decisions about our community? Who decides what gets built and what doesn’t? Or how we address pollution?
  • Community positives? Things you notice that are healthy for our community?
  • Is there anything you see that could use some care and attention?
  • What might you change about our environment?

Community Walks and Climate Resilience

  • We want students to envision a resilient community, where community engagement and civic action lead to a healthier, more equitable society.
  • Connection and interdependence builds resilience. Community walks can build bonds of understanding as students, teachers, and community members share experiences.
  • As students build their knowledge of climate science and the effects of climate change, they can explore how their neighborhoods could be affected.
  • Sharing community walks with local leaders can help students identify ways to take action on issues facing their schools and communities.
