Why are some elements more dense than others?

  • Density of an atom depends on:
    • The Number of particles (protons, electrons, and neutrons) in the atom
    • The electromagnetic force between the protons and the electrons in the atom.
      • The stronger the force between the protons and electrons, the more densely/tightly packed the atom will be.
      • The Neutrons get in the way of this force

Task: Analyze and Interpret Lab

  1. In partners to help ensure reliable data.
  2. Send one person to pick up a kit. Each kit has a sample of Silicon (Si).
  3. When done measuring Silicon, send a partner to get another metal sample.
