3B: EVIDENCE COLLECTION

Question that guided discussion during the lesson was created by students on Monday.

Teacher instructed students to write their answer to the focus question for the day before the discussion using the ACE protocol.

Teacher reviewed with students the goals of the discussion and that they would evaluate themselves based on the goals.

S: “I disagree with you, Patrice, and agree with [student name] and Mia because on page 44, it says,...” T responds by asking, “What does that make you think?”

T: “So Janai if I’m correct, you’re saying that he purposely fell because he wanted to set them up.”

S: “ I agree with [student name] and [student name] because…”

S: “I disagree with you, Jakira because why would he fall out on purpose?”

Students were given 5 minutes to write down what they think now after the discussion concluded.

Teacher instructed students to discuss answer and rubric for about three minutes with the person hooked to his/her table.

Why did Scho fall from the tree?

“On the first day, we read it, and we shared questions we had about the story. Then we tried to answer some of those questions by looking closely at the text.”

S: “When he reaches, do this, did he pull the branches?”

S: “But why (s to s ?)... on page 42, it says, he found a wonderful seat.

S asked during the discussion, “Wouldn’t he fall out” and another student said, “No, because--”

T: “The first one--almost all of us contribute as a goal.”

T: “I want to remind everyone to check on the wait time. Make sure no one else is trying to speak when you’re going to speak. Madal go ahead.”

At the 19:55 mark, teacher said, “We’re running out of time. I want to hear from Mia, Gershwin, and Donald, and Evalise have been waiting.”

T: “Jakira, go ahead.”

Teacher called on Donald.

Teacher summarized the reasons provided by students during the discussion for why Schol fell from the tree

Teacher told Jakira to join in with a group of three.

T: “So I just want Gershwin to end with us by sharing what three answers he thinks everybody talked about.”

“On the first day, we read it, and we shared questions we had about the story. Then we tried to answer some of those questions by looking closely at the text.”

T to S: “Why do you think he fell on purpose?”

T: According to the text, why did Scho fall from the tree?”

T to S: “And so he purposely did what? What do you mean?”

T: “So you’re saying he sat in that seat knowing it was dangerous, that he could fall out. But why would he make himself fall out?”

T: “Why would he want attention?”

Teacher asked students to do a thumbs up if their answer changed and a thumbs down if it stayed the same.

T: “What did you guys discuss?”

T: “If he fell out on purpose, then there’s different ways to look at it from here. When he fell out on purpose, did he fall out because he didn’t want to get in a fight?

Or did he fall out on purpose because he wanted attention?”

After student shared three reasons, teacher asked if anybody else had a fourth or

fifth reason.

T: “Is falling out because he got nervous the same as falling out on accident?”
