Introduction

The Skin is very elastic , durable , and complex . It is the largest organ of the body . It wraps the adult body in about 20 square feet of tissue that weight about 6 or 7 pounds . On the eyelids the skin is thinner than a page of book , but on the soles of the feet it may be ¼ inch thick .

The types of skin is determined by genetics, although it will also be affected by other factors and can change with time. Based on these characteristics, there are five types of healthy skin: normal, dry, oily, combination (both oily and dry skin) and sensitive. Did you know that every skin type reacts differently to each ingredient? Commercial products made for the entire population may not really be the best bet for your skin! Which is why knowing your unique skin type is extremely essential for your skincare.

Skin Types

“Normal Skin”

Skin is generally classified as “normal” if it isn’t overly oily or dry and doesn’t face any persistent skin concerns or conditions. This well balanced healthy skin type has even levels of moisture and hydration, uniform texture and no obvious problem areas (in other words, you’ve hit the skin care jackpot). That said, normal skin can experience slight variations in oiliness and dryness - and even the occasional breakout - when exposed to environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution.

Balanced Oil Production

Because of a healthy balance of oil and water, normal skin feels even and balanced. It can simply do its job: be a barrier, eliminator, regenerator and absorber. If you have this healthy skin type, you only require maintenance with a great skin care routine, which we will unpack below.

Barely Visible Pores

Your pores are not obviously large (which would be a sign of oily skin) - in fact they’re barely visible. Lucky you!

Cleansing Feels Fine

Whether you use a foaming cleanser, a balm, or even an oil cleanser, your skin always feels clean and calm. Overall, your healthy skin doesn’t feel tight, dry or sensitive.

Minor Breakouts

You rarely experience breakouts. If you do, you can usually attribute it to neglecting your skin care routine, forgetting to remove makeup and sunscreen or hormonal fluctuations (such as your period).

Minimal Sensitivity

You don’t react to new skin care products or ingredients. Your skin tone is even and smooth.

Now that you’ve identified that your skin type is a normal skin type, here’s how to take care of your complexion so it continues to perform optimally.

Still unsure about your skin type? Watch this In The Mix video as Eminence Organics Lead Skin Care Trainer Natalie Pergar demonstrates three easy steps for categorizing your skin.

Normal Skin Care Routine

1. Cleanser

For normal skin, Alicia says that “choosing a cleanser is more to do with preference because a normal skin type can do well with a gel, cream or oil cleanser.” Her picks are:

Gel Cleanser: Stone Crop Gel Wash

This gentle gel cleanser  washes away impurities without stripping the skin of moisture. Stone crop, chamomile and shea butter combine to hydrate, brighten and balance the complexion.

11 of 52

Cream Cleanser : Lemon Cleanser

If your normal skin experiences the odd bout of dryness, try a cream cleanser. Our Lemon Cleanser  includes lemon and herb oils to hydrate, tone and soften the skin.

Oil Cleanser: Stone Crop Cleansing Oil

For a normal-to-oily complexion, try an oil-based cleanser like our Stone Crop Cleansing Oil. This non-greasy cleansing oil lifts away impurities and excess oil for a fresh complexion. Watch this video to learn how to add a cleansing oil to your skin care routine:

2. Toner

Cleansing and toning work together like shampoo and conditioner: Toning completes the cleansing process by providing hydration, moisture and essential nutrients to keep your skin as healthy as possible. For normal skin, try a hydrating facial mist such as the Stone Crop Hydrating Mist, which keeps skin clean, fresh and dewy all day long with stone crop juice. The other key ingredient, lavender, promotes restoration of the skin and helps the appearance of mildly irritated skin.

3. Exfoliate

Try the rice flour-based Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant to help absorb oil and buff away dead skin cells  for a bright, radiant appearance. The strawberry ingredient helps cleanse, while salicylic acid gently exfoliates and removes impurities to brighten your skin’s appearance and reduce the appearance of pores. Rhubarb is a good source of ascorbic acid and vitamins to fight the appearance of wrinkles, while lactic acid sloughs off dead skin cells to improve skin texture.

4. Mask

Our Stone Crop Masque contains hydrating stone crop, used by herbalists for centuries to smooth and  firm the appearance of skin. This gel mask contains our BioComplex formulation, a booster of antioxidants, Coenzyme Q10, and Alpha Lipoic Acid to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve the look of your skin overall. You only need to apply a small amount which you leave on for 5-10 minutes.

5. Serum

Protect your complexion from the appearance of drying environmental stress by adding an antioxidant-rich serum to your daily skin care routine. Alicia’s picks: Eminence Organics Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum and the Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum. Even with normal skin, you may want to minimize the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles, which is exactly what the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum is designed to do - helping the skin appear firm and plump. To ensure your skin remains hydrated, the Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum supports skin that's been dried out by cold weather. Keep the serum on hand and apply a thin layer a few times a day (no more than three), and feel good knowing it contains wholesome and natural ingredients, like strawberry, rhubarb, and honey.

6. Moisturizer

All skin types require moisture to stay soft, supple and protected. Moisturizing supports the skin’s natural lipid barrier, helping it to better retain water and repel external irritants and stressors. Again, the consistency you choose comes down to preference:

7. Eye Cream

Alicia tells us: “Everyone should be wearing an eye cream! The Wild Plum Eye Cream would be a fabulous choice for normal skin. It is rich in Vitamin K (from iron-rich wild plum) to reduce the look of dark circles.”

8. Facial Oils

Facial oils can be applied before or after moisturizers, depending on the skin care products you’re using. If you prefer, facial oils can be applied to treat your skin before your moisturizer, or you may wish to leave this step until last so that the facial oil can sink through the moisturizer into your skin. The third option is to mix your oil with your moisturizer. Select which method works best for your skin and try out the Camellia Glow Solid Face Oil. This luxurious facial oil contains the highly moisturizing camellia oil that revitalizes and rejuvenates the look of the skin. This oil leaves the complexion looking soft and supple.

“Oily Skin”

Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands in the skin make too much sebum. Sebum is the waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin. There are various home treatments for oily skin.

A person should see a dermatologist if oily skin is severe or home remedies do not work to improve symptoms.

Sebum is vital for keeping the skin healthy. However, too much sebum can lead to oily skin, clogged pores, and acne. Managing oily skin often requires a person making regular skin care a habit.

“Dry Skin”

Dry skin makes the skin look and feel rough, itchy, flaky or scaly. The location where these dry patches form vary from person to person. It's a common condition that affects people of all ages.

Dry skin, also known as xerosis or xeroderma, has many causes, including cold or dry weather, sun damage, harsh soaps, and overbathing.

You can do a lot on your own to improve dry skin, including moisturizing and practicing sun protection year-round. Try various products and skin care routines to find an approach that works for you.

“Combination Skin”

Skin never stays exactly the same as it may easily be affected by seasonal and hormonal changes. While these are factors to take into consideration, there are also some more definitive signs that you may have combination skin.

37 of 52

S

Symptoms

Your t-zone (forehead, down the nose to the chin) is oily, while your cheeks are dry.

Your skin is oilier in summer and dry in winter. In spring and fall, your T-zone is oily while your cheeks are dry.

When you are on your period, your skin might experience breakouts causing you to think your skin is oily. But once your period is over, the breakouts may clear right up and your skin may become flaky.

Mix oats and curd to get a grainy paste.

Apply it on the T-zone and other parts of the face but avoid applying too much on the cheeks.

Massage gently and then wash off with plain water.

Use these face packs once a week and get radiant skin naturally.

Sensitive Skin”

Sensitive skin is a common issue but not a medical diagnosis by itself. People with sensitive skin may be more likely to experience skin inflammation, irritation, and discoloration.

People with generally sensitive skin have local reactions to chemicals, dyes, and fragrances present in products that come into contact with their skin.

They may also get rashes or irritation from clothing or friction. Some people are allergic to certain substances and may react on their skin.

Sensitive skin may also be a symptom of an underlying condition. Finding ways to avoid potential triggers and soothe irritated skin may help people with sensitive skin find relief and improve their quality of life.
