Problem Statement

  • Identified Problem: Ecological crisis done by humans caused by a lack of protection for environments and awareness how vital nature is to human life.
  • Target Audience: Plant owners, gardeners, or beginners who wish to learn more about gardening and sustainable living.
  • Themes: ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING & AGRICULTURAL EXCELLENCE
  • Importance of the Problem: Why is it crucial to address this issue? The world has been facing an environmental crisis for the past few decades due to industrialization, increased pollution, and deforestation. It is important to conserve nature in order to sustain a healthy civilization. This project promotes ecological awareness and a more sustainable / natural way of life and also, for large scale integration, farmers could use it to identify issues with soils and be notified immediately, potentially saving a lot of time and money.

Project Description

  • Solution Overview: Our tool will monitor your house plants and motivate you to take care of them by sending the plant owner constant reminders by email if their plant is left unattended. The user can input the ideal levels of water and temperature. Additionally, the plant’s health levels are displayed on a TFT screen.
  • Unique Value Proposition: Our solution is unique since it uses ESP32 SMTP feature to send plant’s status through Gmail, user defined parameters, and an advanced TFT screen to display all health levels, specifically the product uses sensors to measure (1) soil moisture and (2) temperature / humidity of the plants surrounding environment. All of the components are safely kept inside a one of a kind enclosure that the plant can be placed on top of. The goal of our design was to provide a simple yet effective solution so that it is more accessible to all kinds of users.

Technical Description

  • Hardware Components: TFT Screen, Wires, Soil Moisture sensor (LM393), DHT11, ESP32, Arduino Uno, A plant (epipremnum aureum)
  • Software & Tools: C++ in Arduino IDE
  • Technical Challenges: Displaying the output on the TFT screen as per desired format, and being able to send emails periodically.

  • Use Cases:
    1. Keep houseplants healthy, or monitor multiple plants within a greenhouse
  • Future Work:
    • Besides Gmail, other platforms could be used, so our hope is to add Whatsapp as another platform from which to send other notifications.
    • Currently the emails send requests for either more water or different temperature by the plant and the TFT screen displays all levels, an improvement would be for emails to include current levels.
    • A smaller and more accurate components so it can function either indoor or outdoor in various climates.
