Carolina Boxer Rescue

UX/UI Redesign

Capstone Project Proposal

Ben Collins

Spring 2026

2 of 8

Project Description:

A full redesign and implementation of the Carolina Boxer Rescue (CBR) Website, emphasizing modern best practices for web development and intuitive user experiences.

I have already met with two CBR employees to discuss project goals, constraints, and current website pain points. I have been in communication with Professor Deborah Tyndall from UNCW’s School of Nursing who has helped to coordinate meetings with CBR employees. I will schedule follow up meetings to discuss project progress at key points in iteration and design testing.

Project Inspiration

My primary career aspiration is user interface design and development. This collaborative, client-driven capstone project will allow me to continue specializing the digital arts skillset which I have built. I have a passion for building user-friendly and intuitive digital experiences which provide the maximum value to clients.

This project presents a win-win-win scenario for myself as an aspiring designer, CBR as a non-profit organization seeking a low barrier to entry for website users, and the users themselves as busy individuals who want a smooth and convenient digital experience.

Excellent example of the balance between engaging and simplistic design.

To ensure a professional and comprehensive workflow for this project, I will be implementing the design system laid out in The Human-Computer Interaction Handbook (Jacko 977).

This diagram encapsulates the interactive design and iteration process well. However, as it is a bit complex, a simple draft of my intended workflow is placed at the bottom of this slide.

Project Method

Analysis > Concept Iteration > Screen Design Standards > Detailed Interface Design > User Testing > Feedback Implementation

All major steps will include iteration and feedback implementation.

Project Vision

Current Website Pain Points:

Navigation Confusion (broken links, too many routes to the same destination)

Text-Heavy (primary call to action should be visual)

Stylistic inconsistency

Additional Desired Features:

Vlog entry panel

Search Engine Optimization improvements

Content search methods

Small custom animated/responsive elements

I have documented the primary concerns expressed during my initial meeting with CBR employees. These are the specific challenges that I will overcome with this project.

Once primary issues have been resolved, I will use remaining time to implement desired features based on employee needs and industry standards.

Visual Direction

Website Colors: Two-toned blue (already present in company logo), white, and black.

Emotional Tone: Professional, earnest, friendly, simple.

Underlying Story: The narrative of this website will be the need for boxer caretakers and the immediate ability for the user to join the cause. Website images and text will communicate clearly the legitimate need experienced by these animals, and the calls to action will be for help at whatever level a user is capable (scaling from a small donation to featured merchandise to pet adoptions).

Stylistic Inspiration: Simplicity and polish will be my visual priorities when proposing stylistic choices. The CBR logo is composed of simple color blocks and drawn shapes. I will extend this style while focusing on clean visuals without rough edges, unnecessary borders, or cluttered spacing.
